Leitao created the
Morgellons
Research Foundation (MRF) and its associated web
site in 2002 to promote awareness of the disease and to raise
money for research. The Morgellons Research Foundation (MRF) is
a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness and
research funding for the illness “Morgellons
disease“.
The Morgellons Research Foundation has adopted
a draft Case Definition developed by their Medical Advisory
Board that is intended to be refined as new information is
available. Researchers from the Morgellons Research Foundation
consider Morgellons a distinct and novel disease.
For a few years, the Morgellons Research
Foundation (MRF) has been registering people who think they
have symptoms of Morgellons. As of February 2006, more than
2,000 reports of the disease have been reported on the
Foundation's website. The foundation raises public awareness of
Morgellons via web and press campaigns; conducts letter writing
campaigns to state officials.
The Morgellons Research Foundation states that
Morgellons has been reported in every American state, and
15 other countries.
The Foundation's website states, "This
non-profit foundation is dedicated to finding the cause of
an emerging infectious disease, which mimics scabies and lice.
In addition, "according to statistics from the
Morgellons Research Foundation (MRF), the majority (95%)
of affected patients also report symptoms of disabling
fatigue and self-described "brain fog" or problems with
attention.
