| There are still many unknowns about this disaster, but it appears scientists are surprised and encouraged that what happened in the gulf was not as terrible as had been predicted. Long term effects to the species who inhabit the gulf remain questions, but recovery in the gulf appears to be occurring and damage seems not to be as bad as was feared: The BP Oil Spill: How Healthy Is the Gulf One Year Later? Time magazine By BRYAN WALSH Bryan Walsh – Tue Apr 19, 4:00 am ET Carl Safina headed down to the Gulf Coast just days after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on April 20, 2010. A veteran of the Exxon Valdez spill - and the head of the Blue Ocean Institute, a nonprofit that focuses on marine health - Safina wanted to see the Gulf oil spill up close, to document something he was sure would be an environmental catastrophe. Researching what would become the book A Sea in Flames - which goes on sale April 19 - Safina spent time with Gulf fishermen and ecologists, toured oiled beaches and spoke to people involved in the cleanup. As long as the oil kept spilling, just about everyone had the same opinion: the spill would be truly catastrophic for the Gulf and its coast. "We didn't know how it would stop or when it would stop," says Safina. "Gulf fishermen who'd invested their lives in the industry were convinced they'd never fish again." Yet nearly a year after the spill began, it seems clear that the worst-case scenario never came true. It's not that the oil spill had no lasting effects - far from it - but the ecological doomsday many predicted clearly hasn't taken place. There is recovery where once there was only fear. "A lot of questions remain, but where we are now is ahead of where people thought we'd be," Safina says. "Most people expected it would be much worse." (See TIME's exclusive photos of the BP oil spill.) As we approach the anniversary of the spill, Safina's judgment is becoming the accepted wisdom: it could have been worse. That isn't to minimize what did happen in the Gulf of Mexico. Roughly 4.9 million barrels of oil blew out of BP's broken well and bled into the water, with a portion of that crude making landfall along the coastline. Add in the unknown effect of 1.84 million gallons (7 million L) of chemical dispersants, much of which were applied directly to the well deep below the surface of the ocean - something that had never been done before. Even the cleanup might have had an impact on the environment, thanks to the burning of oil on the surface of the Gulf, and the tens of thousands of workers who trampled along the sensitive wetlands of Louisiana, corralling crude wherever they could. Scientists caution that a single year isn't long enough to draw any final conclusions about an environmental insult so huge. Yet the damage does seem so far to have been less than feared. Take the oil itself: scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration estimated last August that much of the oil had remained in the Gulf, where it had dispersed or dissolved. Many environmentalists attacked the report for underplaying the threat of large underwater oil plumes still active in the Gulf, yet later independent scientific studies indeed found that oil had largely disappeared from the water. Turns out we can thank bacteria. Scientists from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; University of California, Santa Barbara; and Texas A&M University traveled to the site of the blown well and found that microbes had digested much of the oil and methane that remained in the water. By autumn, the levels were back to normal. "It's very surprising it happened so fast," John Kessler, an oceanographer with Texas A&M, told me earlier this year. "It looks like natural systems can handle an event like this somewhat on their own." (See pictures of crabbing in the Gulf after the BP disaster.) Indeed, for all the work and the billions poured into the cleanup, nature itself - and luck - played a very big role. Fortunate ocean currents kept some of the oil from ever reaching shore, while the decision to increase the flow of the Mississippi River provided an additional pushback. As a result, while parts of the southern Louisiana coast were hit hard by the oil - and crude can still be seen in the marshes - much of the Gulf Coast was spared heavy oiling, and the spill never curled around Florida as forecasters feared in the early days. Around 8,000 birds were identified as killed by the spill, though researchers suggest that at least eight times as many likely died but were never found. Even so, that would be far less than the 250,000 birds estimated killed in the aftermath of the Valdez spill, even though that spill was far smaller. Local conditions mattered - the Valdez spill occurred in the relatively compact Prince William Sound, maximizing the impact on birds in the area, while the BP spill spread out over some 1,600 miles (2,580 km) of the Gulf Coast. The Gulf's valuable fisheries also seem to have escaped the worst damage. John W. Tunnell Jr., the associate director of the Harte Research Institute at Texas A&M, estimated in a report that the region's shrimp fisheries would rebound to normal within two years, while blue-crab populations would be back to normal this year and commercial fish species such as red snapper and grouper largely escaped any negative impact. (Oyster beds, hit hard by the oil, might take up to a decade to recover, however.) It's possible that the lengthy moratorium on fishing in much of the Gulf during the worst days of the spill - when up to 84,000 sq. mi. (217,600 sq km) were off limits - may have even given some fish species a much needed break from exploitation, allowing them to recover in population. (See a video about evictions due to the BP oil spill.) Nonetheless, 1,000 sq. mi. (2,600 sq km) of water over the original Deepwater Horizon site are still off-limits, and we won't really know how quickly fishing will rebound until boats are back in the water in large numbers, reporting back to scientists. (The herring fishery in Alaska's Prince William Sound seemed fine after the Valdez spill, only to collapse three years later.) The already overfished bluefin tuna saw some of its spawning areas in the Gulf hit by the oil and dispersants, though it looks like the fish managed to weather the worst of the accident. In recent weeks marine biologists have found unusually high numbers of dead dolphins washing up on the Gulf Coast - the fate, some scientists suspect, of many of the species' young born during the spill. And Samantha Joye, a marine scientist at the University of Georgia in Athens, found evidence of dead invertebrates - starfish and even coral - on the bottom of the Gulf, along with oily, sticky bacteria. "These are keystone species to the ecosystem," Joye said at the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in February. Indeed, that's the challenge for any scientists trying to tally up the ecological cost of the oil spill "The Gulf spill is far from over," says Doug Inkley, senior scientist with the National Wildlife Federation. A year has passed, but we may only be at the beginning. The BP Oil Spill: How Healthy Is the Gulf One Year Later? - Yahoo! News

| Then there are the scientists who didn’t get to tally at all. Looks like they may have suffered from the same thing that the 100+ microbiologists had who died in strange ways. Whistleblowers 266 Have a look here for the real news on the Gulf., and how BP is STILL covering up . Emails expose BP’s efforts to control research into impact of Gulf oil disaster | Florida Oil Spill Law Read the following link to see how many baby dolphins have washed up dead and deformed since January. The Pres has put a block on main stream media reporting of this. Dolphins | Florida Oil Spill Law Unfortunately this is what the rulers do. Just put out placating rubbish to keep the masses quiet and happy so they can enjoy the next game show. Not surprising the folks in Louisiana think they have been forgotton about whilst suffering terrible illness. It’s time people started to question every piece of PR that is put out there and not take it at face value.

| Although not discussed in detail the article does mention some of the worst issues still facing the recovery in the gulf as well. There are still many questions and I think that was discussed too along with the off limits area of the gulf. One thing you need to keep in mind is who is yelling the loudest about government cover-ups. Many who are extreme radicals are involved in yelling the loudest. Quite frankly I do not trust much of what they say either, especially when I know the on video taped agendas of such radicals is to control people by raising the price of oil and other energy commodites in order to topple the financial health of developed countries so they can take over. Mostly it is people of modest financial means who soon will shivering in the corners during winter because they cannot afford to heat their homes or buy bread to eat (that being energy dependent too). There are always risks and trade offs, some of them quite frightening risks such as what happened in the Gulf. Hopefully people learn from such disasters to prevent them in the future. Life itself is a risk, but I do not want to see millions of people die off because radicals do not want energy to run the machinery which allows our food (messed up some of that food being grown is) to be grown or allows us to live in circumstances above that mud floored and thatch roofed home found in many of the very poor countries.

| Yes the article did mention some of the points. The upshot of this is that we are all going to end up in mud huts..thats if we are lucky. I have spent a couple of years looking into all that carla has been saying and its a rabbit hole. One goes deeper and deeper finding out startling stuff. But now its actually in the face of everyone, it's not even hidden. Yes there are folks who will never wake up to it and God help them and their kids. Those who know something isn't right and look further find out what has been there all along. ALL the govt's are puppets. Nothing changes with any of them. All these disasters happening but the reasons put out have too many discrepancies. Why did the head of BP offload a lot of his shares before the disaster? coincidence? Same with 911 loads of shares offloaded before it happened. I have listened to too many credible people many highly qualified not conspiracy hysterical idiots but sane concerned people. There is going to be a big world food shortage, that should get rid of a few because that is the agenda make no mistake. Heavens, some are even on film saying this. When the food dries up we'll all have to have GM. That’s the plan, another fortune for the 'club' .I KNOW this sounds incredible but if folk took the time to do a little research they would be on a rollercoaster ride and it would become clear as day. I am not new age (def old age) or a conspiracy nut & no one leads me anywhere, I go on instinct & something was telling me something really wrong was/is going on. And it is. And it's shocking. And it can be proved. For example, your economy is controlled from London. The orders come from London. Not a lot of point in the civil war then. Thirteen of your presidents have blood ties to our royal family. Another coincidence. The wars are orchestrated because the 'club' make a fortune out of them. The Bush family backed Hitler & Britain in WW2. If there is anyone who thinks something is amiss here and wants to look further but doesn't know where to start contact carla or me or anyone that is awake and we'll show you. You know when we have sunk to the level that Britain has, when the 5yr olds are going to be taught different positions of s** and about the oral aspect of same we have to acknowledge that truly sick people are in charge. And it will be coming to you soon. Sorry to go on so long but this I feel strongly about & the wool is being pulled over the eyes of the people. Don't believe the politicians they are not your friends. Why have the radiation monitors been taken away on your west coast. Because they don’t want you all to know what dose you are getting. They are even saying radiation is good for you!! Because you can’t see it you forget you are eating it. Obama was for change & closing Guantanamo..did it happen? No. Nor will it. Cameron here was for giving us a referendum on leaving EU. Did it happen? No. When he got in power on lies he said we couldn't have one. They are ALL puppets different faces same agenda. And that is the truth!

| The strings might be attached to their back pockets. My only hope is they fall from the very weight of any apparatus they've constructed. Anything top heavy trips over itself.I'm adding to this post, because Pat made some good points. It's just going to take a little time. One of environmental argument promotes how a portion of any population should be relegated to subsistence farming (not sustainable). They'll prattle about how the carbon footprint would be almost eliminated as long as these environmentalists are not the ones digging around the dirt. Yes, they're arguing for us to live in upgraded mud huts. This video talks about the reality of one man who is trapped living this way as well as points made by other people. Nero had the attitude of so many in power so long that they can't remember how they came by it. They often start to believe their success is due to genetics. I hope Pat didn't think the movie thread is a way of ignoring this one because it wasn't. Just in case, here's Pat's humorous video from that thread which shows exactly how emperors think and why America wanted to get away from them. Last edited by MeToo; April 20th, 2011 at 07:57 AM. |

| That was a very powerful video about subsistence farming Metoo. I cannot imagine living this way. No wonder these folks have no chance to get out of their situation. They have to work all day long without stopping just to have barely enough food and a roof (thatched, full of insects no doubt) over their heads. Be sure to notice how that one "farmer" has to chop the soil with what looked like some type of machete, no plow and no shovel and no animal to ease even some of the burden. The radical environmental movement, as it chips away daily at our freedom, is the way to control people, pushing them into a similar life style. This is why at one time the feudal system was so popular with the elite in Europe. This is why this movement is so popular with all the radicals who currently are disguising themselves with the cloak of environmentalism and save the planet slogans. I mean just look at the lavish life style of many of these radicals, starting with Alphonse Gore. This is why I warn all of us to beware of the this movement. If it is to save the planet it is only to save the planet for themselves. This movement is totalitarianism at its best and I suspect much of it is coming out of the former USSR. Anyway, if you would like to see some of this latest radical stupidity which is leading to absolute control of every facet of life in the Western world here's an article I found this morning: TIME: Ice Makers Are Destroying the Planet! Fire it up Want to save the Earth? Easy, just buy a couple of ice trays. To the long list of human inventions that are wrecking global climate—the internal combustion engine, the industrial era factory—add the automatic ice maker. Climate modelers have long known that households are far bigger contributors to global warming than most laypeople realize. For all the blame tailpipe emissions take for escalating temperatures, homes and office buildings are actually the single largest contributor to greenhouse gasses. One key reason is the 100-plus million refrigerators in America's 111 million households. According to the Department of Energy, the standard fridge sucks up about 8% of the electricity used by all homes—a pretty big share given the dozens of big and small appliances and electronics that are also drawing juice. …the Department of Energy has announced that it intends to add 84 kilowatt hours to the efficiency rating of every refrigerator equipped with an icemaker. Consumers will feel that fact in the wallet—and if manufacturers don't scramble to improve their numbers, they soon will too. TIME: Ice Makers Are Destroying the Planet! - Ice Machine - Fox Nation
