| Hi all! I think what I'm about to tell you may be extremely beneficial for some. One theory I have is that the cognitive issues (and perhaps other issues) related to Morgellons are the result of high ammonia. To lower ammonia levels, one must simply take L-Carnitine daily. Doing so has helped my cognitive issues tremendously. |

| Banana - You must be a Dr. Staninger patient. That is part of her protocol (and it works). She talks a lot about ammonia buildup, and many people report that their urine smells like ammonia or hair permanent solution. L-Carnitine helps this tremendously. SS |

| OK thanks. This may sound silly. One of the first incidents with M. I went to the hair salon and when I came out I had white powder looking stuff around my nostril and lip line and a brown goo on my cheek with a new big bump. I always wondered if that smell drove them out ? I never went back and my hair is to long ![]() |

| An earlier thread which discusses lowering ammonia levels, suggestions about L-ornithine, L-arginine, Alpha-ketoglutaric (AKG) and Miracle ll neutralizer from several members. Also some discussion about why L-ornithine and L-arginine should probably not be used at the same time: Why Ammonia levels may be high in Morgellons patients

| Thanks for the link-back, tcm. Now I am questioning whether it was L-Carnitine for the ammonia, or the other two. All three are in her protocol and it's been a couple of years so my memory is failing me. Maybe not enough L-Carnitine!! SS |

| Protective effect of L-carnitine in ammonia-precipitated encephalopathy in the portacaval shunted rat G Therrien, C Rose, J Butterworth, R F ButterworthNeuroscience Research Unit, Hopital Saint-Luc, (University of Montreal), Quebec, Canada AbstractL-carnitine administration prevents the neurological symptoms of acute ammonia toxicity. To further evaluate its efficacy in the prevention of hepatic encephalopathy in hyperammonemic conditions, L-carnitine (16 mmol/kg, intraperitoneally [i.p.) was administered 1 hour before ammonium acetate (NH4OAc) (8.5 mmol/kg, subcutaneously) to portacaval shunted (PCS) rats. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) ammonia, lactate, and amino acid levels were measured in relation to deteriorating neurological status in these animals. None of 35 L-carnitine-treated animals showed neurological deterioration after NH4OAC administration compared with saline-treated controls; the latter manifested severe encephalopathy progressing through loss of righting reflex to coma. Survival rate was 100% in the L-carnitine-treated group compared with 5% in saline-treated controls. Following NH4OAC administration to PCS rats, CSF ammonia increased to 0.93 ± 0.15 mmol/L and 1.24 ± 0.15 mmol/L at precoma and coma stages of encephalopathy (P < .01) respectively. Treatment with L-carnitine reduced CSF ammonia at both precoma and coma stages; the time-course of this protective effect paralleled blood and CSF L-carnitine accumulation. CSF alanine and lactate increases following NH4OAC administration to PCS rats were significantly attenuated following L-carnitine treatment. However, L- carnitine treatment did not lead to significant reductions in plasma ammonia nor CSF or brain glutamine in these animals. These findings show the therapeutic efficacy of L-carnitine in ammonia-precipitated coma in PCS rats and suggest that this protective effect is centrally mediated involving improved mitochondrial respiration. L-carnitine could be of therapeutic benefit in the prevention of hepatic encephalopathy precipitated by ammoniagenic conditions in humans with chronic liver disease. | SS, Do you have a link for a concise list of the exact protocols Dr. Staninger would recommend? I have checked her site, and I also checked the site that sells some of her products. But it would be very helpful if you know a complete and exact list. The threads here tend to meander and it's too time consuming to have to piece together the entire protocol. I have part of it, but I did not know the L-Carnitine was used in her strategy so I am probably missing other things as well. I know some things are different for each person, but she recommends other things for all of us. Thanks! |
