| Hi, all; I'm new. I apologize in advance for the length of this post. I found this thread looking for ways to deal with laundry and cotton. The topic changed over time but I have some questions going back to the laundry issue. I'm a little confused! Here's what I've read here and elsewhere; please correct me if I'm wrong and about to blow up the house by mixing things that shouldn't be mixed; Eco Vie in laundry will get rid of mold / fungus. Bug arrest in laundry will get rid of bugs. Vinegar in laundry will help with pilling and the formation of fiber cacoons. Oxy-Clean in laundry because the critters hate oxygen. Borax in laundry for some reason I haven't found yet. Bleach in laundry because it kills anything. Dr. Bronner's peppermint soap because they hate peppermint. Ok, I'm using the vinegar, oxy, borax. I've been using it with an "eco friendly" detergent from Sam's. I simply stopped wearing anything that had a tendency to pill. The only thing that pills now are the polyester plush throws I'm using as blankets. I wash them after every use, which might be overkill. They do pill, but the pills are clean; no dark threads or dark colors at the ends of the pills. I've been trying the Dr. Bronner's for the last few days but it leaves an oily residue on clothing. They don't smell clean and they retain body odor. I don't smell very good by the end of the day. Also, people with high blood pressure aren't supposed to use peppermint; just the fragrance raises the blood pressure. I've stopped bleaching everything because it irritated my skin; I bleach only the clothing that would normally be bleached. I got rid of all my cotton bedding and bought polyester satin sheets and pajamas. I haven't used the bedding yet; don't know how it will work. I'm saving it for when I move at the end of the month. in the meantime, I'm sleeping in a leather recliner with just the poly plush throw for cover. The poly satin PJ's do pill at the seams, but no biting; the pills seem to be clean and without critters. I got rid of all my cotton undies (that pained me! I've always been an all-cotton girl.) and got the stretchy kind and rayon. Someone somewhere said his wife cut the cotton out of the crotch in panties. I haven't done that, but have been wearing them inside out. What a dweeb. Question - can cotton be made ok to wear with a combination of any of the above-mentioned laundry detergents/additives? I have a few things I really don't want to part with, but mostly I'm thinking of health reasons. Wearing polyester all the time can't be good for the skin. I work in non-profit and make very little income and I'm single. There's no way I can afford to invest in a lot of the things people are using for laundry, body, environment. I simply don't ahve the disposable income to do it. So, with all those additives, what's actually used in each wash load? How do you use the Bug Arrest and Eco-Vie for laundry and how much? If you use them, do you still add borax and oxy? Does it work for cotton? (I kept / buy nothing that comes from China, Viet Nam, Indonesia, etc. I have kept some items that came from South America and Jordan.) Sorry this is so long! I've stopped buying most things at Walmart; I read someone somewhere say they get "swarmed" when they go in there. I wouldn't call it swarming; it feels more like the critters on me become very active in the presence of a lot of other critters in the store; group mind or something. I can always tell when I'm around a person or in a place where it is. I begin to have a mild anaphalactic reaction and a loud high-pitched 'chirping/ buzzing' in my ears and then they become active, esp. around my face/eyes. Bizarre. Since I'm here and hopefully someone's going to read and respond, what I'm doing for hair / body is Selsun Blue medicated shampoo mixed with a little Selsun Blue that has a nice fragrance, a little Dr. Bronner's plain and a couple of drops of tea tree oil. I can't say whether it's helping or not; I don't know how bad it would be if I discontinued, but I still have the senstion of something walking on my hair, disturbing it or lighting on it and mild itchiness. I'm losing hair, eyebrows and eyelashes like everyone else. They have a glob of something on the root end when they come out. I wash my brushes in the washer on hot with detergent, borax and oxy. Combs I soak with detergent and bleach water. I don't have big lesions; I get tiny pimple-like things and I don't touch them if I can help it. I have the fibers in my hair and occasionally find them on me but I'm not aware of having any protrude from skin. I have seen them move and that's pretty weird, for sure. I may be in the early stages or I may not get the lesions; my itching mostly feels like wearing scratchy wool all over all the time. I do have some deep itching but it seems to move from place to place. The pills / cacoons still sting if I let them form at all. The vinegar in the laundry helps, although not perfectly. For awhile talcum powder kept them at bay as well, but lately some stubborn ones are stinging right through it. I'm going to get some medicated powder today and try that. Mostly it's where clothing is tight, esp. in bra. Unfortunately I'm moving into a senior complex where the units have only shower stalls, not bathtubs. I'd lile to try some of the bathing routines / additives people have suggested but not sure how without a bath tub. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I've always been leary of putting anything strange into my body. I haven't taken any meds in 15 years. So I don't think I'll go the colloidal silver route or take some of the other things that people have said work. I react to so many things; I'm afraid to try anything like that. But still searching on that score. Thanks for any help you can give, esp. the immediate laundry concern. |

| Oh, sorry...one more question - does EVERYTHING have to be washed in hot water if the proper additives are used? You can't wash polyester on hot! That's about all I have left. Something I read by Dr. Wymore (did I get that name right?) said that people were having good results washing as they normally would by adding oxy and borax. I interpreted that as meaning, washing according to mfgr. instructions. |
