TCM - I had only ever heard about baking powder having aluminum, but not baking soda. Clearly I got concerned when you mentioned it as I have been instructed by my doc to take baking soda and epsom salt baths for my yeast issues. I also used to drink the stuff. When I googled for it, the earth clinic link came up. So the link gave me a little sigh of relief

Default Skylark: Saturated Salt Baths for Scalp, Head and Body

Adding another member's suggestion for treating the scalp (and this time the body) as we move along here at MDR. This one seems both effective and low in cost.

Another person suggested salt baths.. just plain salt, and enough in the tub (2-3 lbs or 1 and 1/2 kg) to make saturated salt water.
Water is saturated when no more salt will dissolve in it.

The first baths were hard to do because of the 'things' coming off my skin; like I said, swimming with paranahs.

I quickly learned to take a good shower using cupfuls of salt water before the baths to get as many of the 'things' off my skin as I could before climbing into the tub.

First salt baths were short, about 15 minutes. Sometimes, so much of them came out of my skin that I drained the tub, scrubbed and rinsed it out, and took a second bath.

After a week I could stay in the tub for half an hour.

I found that soaking my head and scalp and hair was helpful.
Leaving the salt water to air dry on skin, scalp and in hair has proved to be really helpful.

I also learned NOT to eat prior to these baths: What your mother did tell you about no swimming after lunch was TRUE!! Once, during a salt bath, I found myself flopping around in the tub, unable to get out, unable to reach for the plug or do anything more than writhe in cramped agony arms and legs imploring the Four Directions : not a pretty sight and no fun.
I can laugh now....

I tried baking soda, but found it less helpful than salt.
Epsom was not something I tried, owing to the cost and only small packets are available in the UK.

I discovered that any old salt worked for me, the cheaper the better.
I now only take showers, but continue to use salt every time; I mix it up in a plastic cup as I go and still leave it to air dry on skin, scalp and in hair.

Hope this helps, and you're not alone with all this weirdness.
I used to really enjoy taking baths, hot showers, just the process of getting clean and feeling wonderful afterward such a simple life pleasure. Now I hate baths, showers and the whole process of immaculately wiping down everything after use, all of it a real chore and time-consuming. That said, salt baths restored my skin and scalp, and keeping things tidy reduced the population of 'monsters' in my environment, and fewer returned to my skin to torment me.

Most days, I think of the time when I will be well again, having put this whole bad nightmare behind me. But I really think that after this, I will never be quite the same.

Nope.

Karanja oil (Indian, available online) and a far infrared heat pad have helped me.

Just a few suggestions for scalp fungus treatment from an ehow member:

How to Get Rid of Scalp Fungus at Home
By Rio Ann Hessler, eHow Member
User-Submitted Article

Fungus can grow in any parts of the body; skin, foot, scalp. A very common form of fungus that infects the scalp is known as Ringworm. This fungus can be contagious and it survives in any wet environment. These are some tips on getting rid of scalp or hair fungus.

1. First, the most obvious signs that you may be infected by a scalp fungus is an extreme itch and a feeling of urgency to scratch the scalp. When this happens wash the hair thoroughly and dry it very well. If the itchiness doesn't go away, it's likely that your scalp is hosting a fungus.

2. Second, try a home remedy to get rid of the scalp fungus. Buy a bottle of Castor oil. Use a small cotton ball, damp it with the oil and apply it to the entire scalp. Do this step once a day, for two to three days and wear latex gloves when putting on the oil. Wash your hair at least once a day, dry it , and rinse out the oil thoroughly.

3. Third, see a doctor and get a scalp fungus prescription. If the itchiness and fungus don't go away after two to three days, see a doctor and ask for medications. These drugs may kill the fungus in a short time. For some people the drugs may be more effective than home remedies.

4. Drink plenty of natural juices for the duration of the scalp fungus, and along with the treatments. Prepare carrots, celery, cucumber and aloe drinks. Take one of these supplements; B complex, vitamin E and Folic Acid. These vitamins may help fight the fungus and reduce the itch.

the oil of oregano is a great idea, will try it out...been using organic shampoo and add tea tree oil (cheaper than buying tea tree shampoo), on top of that i add slightly watered down dr. bronners peppermint soap.. that did the trick for the matting and frizzies..

Default Questions for folks with really difficult scalp challenges

My scalp is the worst. I have lost nearly 1/2 of my hair - I have fibers (thin, clear like, less than an inch) in my hair and every time I comb it "spores" or something are released into the air. I look like the Peanuts character Pig Pen when I do my hair. It also seems like my hair has been stripped of all protein - it's hollow and brittle....and it's broken and frayed in places...almost like something is eating the ends of it. I have tried nearly everything (peppermint shampoo, lice combs, coconut oil, salt, baking soda, borax, etc.). Just wondering about that Keratin protein treatment that salons offer. It infuses the hair shaft with Keratin and causes the cuticle to lay down (no more flyaways). If I were to do this would it cause the morgies to have a buffet binge on my head (they do that anyhow) or could it possibly help the appearance of my hair? I have considered cutting what is left of my hair off but have heard from some women that cutting it short makes it even more itchy when it starts to grow again. Any ideas/thoughts/opinions are welcome!

Thanks!

Zenmorgie

Default Possible Allergic Reactions To Keratin Hair Treatments

Hello Zenmorgie,

I have heard of folks having allergic reactions to the keratin hair treatments. If your hair is already very thin though you may be unhappy with how it could reveal your hair loss, especially if you already have fine hair. It will make the hair poker straight. It will be hard to hide any thinning spots as there will be less natural lift to the hair. The treatment also could make you lose even more hair. This has happened to some people who went in with normal hair. Personally I think I would give this treatment a pass since there is no way to know how your already stressed scalp and body might react to yet another chemical. Here's a couple links from a quick online search:

Default thanks for the links

Thanks for posting the links. Sounds scary and I don't need any other problems in my world right now so I will definitely avoid this treatment. I suppose I was just dreaming of a quick fix. I miss my hair and am tired of feeling like I have electricity running through my scalp non-stop.....I find it the most difficult symptom to handle - the lesions are awful when they rear up from time to time but the scalp issues are a 24/7 problem for me.

Thanks again!
