| That looks like a great find Terri. I m going to try it. It might help a few of our symptoms, looking at that list . Might be worth hanging some in the chicks houses Pat and Hilly. Quote:

| the seller said it is being outlawed? no surprise....people have been killing germs with it since the 1890's.....so now it is unsafe?? right. but let's see....untested pharmaceuticals and drugs, aspartame, microwaves, msg.....they are safe? kritters |

| Seems the ingredient for this is sodium hydroxide.(LYE) and can be bought in Wilko's B&Q and smaller DIY shops for you to make your own.You have to dress up like a Porton Down employee with long rubber gloves, goggles etc,as when it is mixed with water it goes up to 180 degrees. It can be bought already made on Amazon.I bet our Carbolic soap was similar to this-but that is something else that's disappeared. Dettol soap also works on dirty mouthed children- I Know this for a fact lol.

| You can make your own lye soap for relatively little cost. The main ingredient is lard (pork fat) which can usually be found in grocery stores in the same section as cooking oils and vegetable shortening. Lye (sodium hydroxide) is corrosive in a concentrated form – it used to be used to clear clogged drains and other tasks where its corrosive properties were needed. It’s probably considered hazardous these days (as are many things that actually work). It used to be sold in hardware stores and grocery stores in the US (the brand I remember is “Red Devil Lye”). I’m sure you would want to use gloves when handling the lye itself but the soap made from it has been used safely for hundreds of years. Here’s a link with a recipe: Lye Soap and homemade concoctions The next link also has a recipe and sells the finished product as well: Homemade Lye Soap - Lye Soap - Lard lye Soap This is a link that discusses lye being removed from grocery store shelves and gives some stores that still sell it - it does appear to be available over the internet as well. http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/coldprocesssoapmaking/a/lyesources.htm Last edited by 2manyfibers; October 7th, 2008 at 09:49 PM.
