| This paper is done by the Europeans. Please check out the graphs, they are very interesting. This gives years of field studies and what was studied. Goes back to 1987. http://ftp.jrc.es/EURdoc/JRC52545.pdf |

| Effect on invertebrates For the majority of invertebrate species there was no significant difference between the GMHT and conventional herbicide regimes. However, by the July sampling, there were half the number of bees and two-thirds the number of butterflies found foraging in the GMHT crop areas, compared to the conventional. Also, consistent with previous Farm Scale Evaluation (FSE) results reported for spring-sown crops, the yearly totals for springtails, a type of detritivore which feeds on dead and decaying weeds, were higher in the GMHT crop areas. | Stuff like this makes me think there is no such thing as Science Fiction movies any longer. I think it is terribly wrong how nearly everything is being cross mixed with something else. Makes eugenics popularity look like a near future everyday thing. This world is nuts.

| This is all too crazy. The more I research about gmo's the more I Don't want to put any thing in my mouth. It is just disgusting. We are all just one big scientific experiment. many scientist have warned the world about Gmo's but they are fired or forced to retire because they have "lost their marbles" . In fact they are the only sane ones. |

| Sorry , I am doing this on my iPad so it comes out a little less organized on longer copies. Flashcards: Genetics Final- GMO Lab GMOs= Genetically modified organisms Terms Definitions GMOs= Genetically modified organisms GM= Genetic modified crop plants Promoter- the docking site for RNA polymerase and a signal for where it should start transcribing a gene. Most common one used is in GM crops is 35S promoter from the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV 35S). It is chosen because it already is designed by nature to activate transcription in all plant cell types. Terminator- the signal to stop transcription. Most common terminator used in GM crops is the nopaline synthase (NOS) terminator from Agrobacterium tumefaciens What are the methods used to insert the engineered gene into the cells of the callus? One method is to use the GM version of the soil bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens. Second method is electroporation. A third method is to use a device called a "gene gun" that physically shoots gold particles coated with the engineered DNA into the plant cells. It takes millions of dollars and _______________ to bring each crop to the market. six to fifteen years What are some OBJECTIONS to the GMO? potential to create super-weeds through cross-pollination with herbicide-resistant crops or that super bugs will evolve that are no longer resistant to the toxins in pest-resistant crops. Some worry about potential allergic reactions to the novel proteins or antibiotic resistant arising from the selected markers What are some positives to the GMO? These crops are actually better for the environment, fewer toxic chemicals are pit into the environment and thus fewer toxic chemicals can harm the environment and human health. Crops can preserve arable land by reducing stresses on the land, improve value of food in developing countries, and allow crops to be grown on previously un-farmable land. How do we test for GM Foods? use the antibody-based test such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which can detect the proteins that are produced specifically by GM crops. Not useful in testing foods that have been highly processed, because the proteins have most likely been destroyed. Another test is the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to look for a DNA sequence common to GM foods. Most common regulatory sequences are the 35S promoter form the cauliflower mosaic virus and the NOS terminator from the Agrobacterium tumefaciens. One argument against GM crops are the creation of... Super-weeds At the end of the genetic modification process only _______ percent of the high-yield genes will be transferred to the genetically modified crop. 50% The most common terminator is the? Nopaline sythase (NOS) terminator from the Agrobacterium tumefaciens It can take 6-15 years for a genetically modified food to make it to market. (T/F)? True One popular gene that has been introduced comes from the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens. (T/F)? True Last edited by Janice; July 12th, 2011 at 08:33 AM. |
