Hey Jo,
Quote:
"The preferred substrate for fungus gnat larvae is wet, peaty soils with fungus and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) growing on and in it."
Our soil has this color in spots, no scientific proof although we do live above a lake. Not sure if Aspergillus or cyanobacteria but I know it is not just moss. My husband keeps telling me it is nothing. I am not convinced of that although. Anyway found this from the same site you quoted. Was wondering if I bought a bunch of bags of this and poured it on the soil I believe is helping to breed our issue if it would help. The neighbors sprinklers are over watering to the point of draining into our yard and he does not want to bug them about it. I guess I should go over there sickly looking and ask them to look into it.

Just wondering if we sprinkled this on all dirt areas if it would really help or not. We have a lot of gnats flying about in that area.

Hi Cyn,

Gardeners talk of using DE and sand on fungus gnat larvae infested soil, or neem tea. I've not read alot about dealing with them outside, but hopefully the populations should die out as we go into autumn.

On the bird mite forum they've posted a highlighted version of our micro-myiasis report Yahoo! Groups

cheeky but useful.

What about the reports of arthropods and the agrobacterium.
Steve - the report mentions association of fungus gnat larvae and athropods and makes suggestions about agrobacterium link. I'll post more on this soon.

Post Malpighian tubules

Insect Malpighian (renal) tubules perform jobs analogous to the human kidney. They purify the blood of waste materials, excrete and adjust a primary urine, and thus play a major role in ion and water homeostasis. They are also major immune tissues, and they also detoxify many compounds, like a human liver.

In Drosophila (fruit fly), there are 4 Malpighian tubules (2 on each side of the animal). They are tiny (2 mm long, 35 micrometres wide, and containing around 150 cells.)

Here's some micrographs of insect malpighian tubules:

Thanks Jo,

I will take a look at that. Unfortunately the neighbors either have a broken pipe or are over watering and it is now running off into the very area I was trying to keep dry. My husband said he would put a note on their door as they are hard to connect with otherwise. Just trying to maintain sanity here not easy.

Hi Jo,

I have a question? Is there a blood test yet to detect the most common forms of this? Sorry if you already covered this in a previous post.

Default Flies and maggots

Hi Jo,

I asked this on another thread (but have lost it!) - brain fog again.

I thought fly larva only ate "dead" tissue - the reason I say this is that doctors will sometimes put maggots on necrotic (dying) tissue. The maggots eat the dead tissue and leave the live tissue alone. The maggots can be helpful in cases of gangrene, necrotic bed sores, etc., for the purpose of clearing out the dead tissue and leaving the good tissue behind.

That's why I don't "get" this theory. You're proposing that fly maggots eat live tissue, right?

Help me out here.

Many thanks,

sar

Default Fly Maggots

Actually, I have another interesting tidbit. In animals there is something called
flystrike. It happens when an animal is in unhygienic conditions - like covered in feces, or has sores. The flies are attracted to this and start laying eggs in the wounds. It can create a massive problem, with hundreds of maggots infesting an animal, and can be fatal.

There has to be broken skin for this to start, and not all Morgellons' patients have broken skin.

How can we have a maggot infestation without broken skin? I have not seen the flies around my place, and I have lesions. Wouldn't I be seeing flies? I did have a small moth embedded in my scalp a few months ago, but no flies. Also had a very small bee.

A maggot/fly infestation just doesn't explain (to me, at least) why I would have a moth, for example, embedded in my scalp, and how we can still have Morgellons without having open sores.

Thanks for all the research you've been doing. I'm working hard too. I think we need dialogue to answer questions we all have from time to time. Dialogue without punches!

Many thanks,

sar

Hello,

Reading this highlighted version of our report will hopefully help answer some of these questions:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/birdmitesorg/message/19734

Sar-

Here's my reply to your question about maggots eating dead tissue (on 'Entice the worm' thread: Entice the worm beneath).

Medics are starting to report incidents of maggot therapy turning into myiasis in wounds they were just placed on to clean up.

In science myiasis case reports sometimes it mentions about cutaneous myiasis causing skin 'burns' - caused by the enzymes such as collagenase that they secrete.

When I squeeze a lesion, out of frustration, the liquid releases seems to create a burn type reaction - causing a tiny pimple to spread into a big red sore.

This is one of the major reasons why I think a chronic fly infection is more likely to be a primary cause of disease, rather than, say, collembola - because they don't secrete these chemicals.

Wanna check out if any of these enzymes tie up with nematodes?? or do they feed on plasma? (some do produce similar enzymes- I've checked since writing this)

Because fungus gnats can be carnivorous, they have the capabilities, which is why my focus is with them - also because I have on average 3 flying from my head every day at roughly 5pm .

Hope this helps

Is there any known topical product people have used to kill these baddies? Some kind of cream? I like the recipe you came up with Jo, I just don't know how sucessful I would be at making it.
