Needham, MA November 17, 2002 -- Research sponsored by the National CFIDS Foundation was formally announced at the International Symposium on Toxins and Natural Products in Okinawa, Japan on November 17-19, 2002 by Dr. Yo****sugi Hokama. The research, for the first time, discovered ciguatoxin, a potent neurotoxin, in the blood of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients.
"Chronic ciguatera poisoning has already been suggested as a scientific model for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)," stated Dr. Hokama. Ciguatoxins are potent, heat stabile, non-protein, lipophilic sodium channel activator toxins and are recognized as some of the most potent biological toxins known. They produce dramatic neurological manifestations, such as peripheral sensory or motor symptoms (including paresthesias, pain, burning, tingling, numbness), central symptoms such as headache, autonomic dysfunction and also affect multiple body systems (gastrointestinal, immune, hepatic, cardiovascular) and the muscles.
Many CFS patients in the study had higher levels of the toxin than the patients with cancer, hepatitis or acute ciguatera poisoning." |
This next source discusses ciguatera poisoning and this time W.John Martin is involved again with a lot of controversy and questions surrounding his research. This is interesting to me because, from my description of early Morgellons symptoms (first onset from eating fish), the doctor I eventually located said I had ciguatera poisoning. I do not remember him running a test to confirm this (heck, I saw him three years after getting so sick), but it sort of does leave me wondering if he did a test but did not give me the test results.
This next article may not be posted without permission so I am posting the link with one sentence from the article:
The National CFIDS Foundation Begins to Disclose its Vital Research Discoveries to the Worldwide Patient Community
The article is convoluted and long, but it does make you think a lot about how research is conducted (maybe not very well or honestly??) and how the researchers weave in and out of the picture probably all in the name of making more $$$$$.
A sentence from the start of this article:
"You were [SIC probably the word
will is meant] learn how little of the actual facts of his discoveries were ever shared by publication in a medical journal or at conferences by Dr. Martin."
This is more information than I have been able to find so far about this elusive and perhaps unreliable person, W.John Martin, along with a timeline of his research activities. Anyone interested in learning more about this person will enjoy this article. It does leave much up in the air, but there is some indication that ciguatera could be involved in chronic fatigue maybe despite questionable research.
