| Non-point source water pollution, once known as "diffuse" source pollution, arises from a broad group of human activities for which the pollutants have no obvious point of entry into receiving watercourses. In contrast, point source pollution represents those activities where wastewater is routed directly into receiving water bodies by, for example, discharge pipes, where they can be easily measured and controlled. Obviously, non-point source pollution is much more difficult to identify, measure and control than point sources. The term "diffuse" source should be avoided as it has legal connotation in the United States that can now include certain types of point sources. Conventionally, in most countries, all types of agricultural practices and land use, including animal feeding operations (feed lots), are treated as a non-point sources. Themain characteristics of non-point sources are that they respond to hydrological conditions, are not easily measured or controlled directly (and therefore are difficult to regulate), and focus on land and related management practices. Non-point source pollutants, irrespective of source, are transported overland and through the soil by rainwater and melting snow. These pollutants ultimately find their way into groundwater, wetlands, rivers and lakes and, finally, to oceans in the form of sediment and chemical loads carried by rivers. As discussed below, the ecological impact of these pollutants range from simple nuisance substances to severe ecological impacts involving fish, birds and mammals, and on human health. The United States is one of the few countries that systematically produces national statistics on water quality impairment by point and non-point sources. In its 1986 Report to Congress, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) reported that 65% of assessed river miles in the United States were impacted by non-point sources. Again, in its most recent study, the US-EPA (1994) identified agriculture as the leading cause of water quality impairment of rivers and lakes in the United States (Table 3) and third in importance for pollution of estuaries. AGRICULTURE is the leading source of impairment in the Nation's rivers and lakes ...". Since the 1970s there has also been growing concern in Europe over the increases in nitrogen, phosphorus and pesticide residues in surface and groundwater. In a recent comparison of domestic, industrial and agricultural sources of pollution from the coastal zone of Mediterranean countries, UNEP (1996) found that agriculture was the leading source of phosphorus compounds and sediment. | I am also living with someone who does not give merit to this and I know how much more difficult it makes it... When I had my little anxiety attack a couple of weeks ago (made husband take my 4 year old son out of the house for the weekend) the water was what started it or maybe the pipes; either way I was cleaning my bathroom sink with some hydrogen peroxide when some spilled on the cold/hot knobs and out of the back of the sink (not sure what you call it but an opening for water overflow) this overflow opening began to bubble and black and brown pieces began spilling out. This continued for hours. I live in a 1930's home so my pipes are probably pretty bad in the first place, but this scared the living *&*& out of me. I was convined at that point that my water and pipes were involved. I used peroxide, borax and natural citris cleaner in all my drains and have seen a huge diffrence in the inner rims of the drains where there was a weird build-up. Quote:

| Yeah, I've got a plumbing issue right now... you know that metal stopper thingy in your bathroom sink... well mine came undone. I went to the Hardware store to buy a replacement and the handy guy there said...'ah... you just hook this piece back on... you get up under the sink and there's this wire...' Well... I get up under there and don't see how this wire re-attaches... I unscrew a nut... and OMG! there's Morg stuff in there that's accumulated... OMG!... YUCK! ![]() So... lol... I need to call in a professional - I'm NOT changing that piece out! NOOOOO! |

| Let me tell you folks...the very first day I got here to the states I had some coffee made with filtered tap water..and guess what?...I GOT SICK!! Seems my 'tummy' wasn't used to those incredibly huge amounts of toxins, huh? Well...one thing helped though...Activated Charcoal. I took 6 tablets within a hour and felt better..had a little diarrhea, but that's all. So I was lucky? hmm...not sure about that...lol.. Ever since there is no way me drinking that stuff anymore....I only drink and use bottled water even though thats contaminated too..but..hey!..besides the ugly chlorine taste..it doesn't seem to harm me...wonder why? Even taking showers with contaminated water has NO affects on me...wow!.. I'm just not scared of anything anymore...There is NO way out anyway!
