Default dirt & gardening

Sometimes I think I am paranoid and other times I think-- OK, something is going on. I finally did a little planting of flowers today. Usually I would dig right in and not think twice. Today, I did not want to touch the dirt.
I felt like there was "activity" while I was gardening. I also noticed that several fingers got small slits (for no reason) and the same things that come out of my face came out of them when I washed and used peroxide. The sores on my face also seemed to be more aggravated.
Am I being paranoid or has anyone else noticed anything similar????
Linda

Linda - I love gardening too and this time of year in the UK is the time to put in bedding plants and fill tubs, pots etc.. I had a couple of little cuts on my finger which had tiny black spot in them and no matter how much I scrubbed it with a nail brush and put DSP on they would'nt come out..

I then thought, blow it, I'll just not care and I will do some gardening and put it my plants. I gardened for about an hour, hands covered in mud, no gloves, and then went to scrub them clean, and low and behold, no more black spots and the cuts were healed up by the next day !!

What does anyone make of this ??? Since then, I've done more gardening and no problems...

Linda, horror of horror's...... thought everything was OK with gardening, but today went to put in more plants in tubs and used some old potting compost - was just about finished when I had terrible stinging all up my hands and arms... felt like I fallen into bed of nettles... really bad.. came in and cleaned with KleenFree and saw lots of threads etc all colours - put loads of DSP all over arms. Still bad, so had a bath in Kleenfree and washed clothes etc. Now a bit better... don't think I can garden again...:<( Hilly

Yea, Hilly. I did very little and was doing my very best not to touch dirt. I was wishing i would have had plastic gloves, but did not. Now i have little razor like cuts on several fingers and they are sore.
I was reading about agrobacterium tumefaciens . They used to think it was only in plants, but are now finding it in humans. I am going to try to find some of the experts.
Sorry you ended up with a bad experience. I know it really bothered me to be that scared to plant flowers...........

I bought some flowers to plant. They are still sitting there. I was wondering about the potting soil I would use. I know that In the past, gardening books use to recommend baking your soil to a certain temp and for a certain amount of time to kill bacteria. I did not want to bring into the house and maybe even put into the air while it was baking. I was wondering if I could bake it in the gas barbecue. My neighbors would really think I am crazy.
