| I have heard that this was a bad combination but can anyone tell me why it's bad to take steroids such as Prednesone with Morgellons? What does it do? My immune system is overreacting and it seems all my doctors want me to take steroids to calm it down. |

| What Are The Treatments For Chronic Inflammation? | LIVESTRONG.COM By Susan Brassard "Vitamins D, E and C and folic acid have anti-inflammatory effects, and foods high in omega 3s, fruits and vegetables, and unrefined carbohydrates may help to reduce the body's inflammatory response. Meditation, yoga, Tai Chi and other relaxation techniques reduce cortisol production in the body. The action of the anti-inflammatory properties in resveratrol, the substance found in red wine, may offer new insight into an effective treatment for chronic inflammatory disease, according to Science Daily." ************************* Bakhshi Dawakhana | Matib Dawakhan Hakim Iqbal Bakhshi | WHATS'S NEW | Copyright 2004 www dot yoursite dot com "Prednisone is a different steroid. It’s a member of the cortisone family of hormones. Our body makes cortisone. Without cortisone, we would die. It is also synthesized in laboratories to be used as a drug. The corticosteroids, as these drugs (hormones) are called, have many actions. They regulate how the body processes sugars and starches (carbohydrates). The can break down protein and shunt it into a cycle where it is converted into glucose (sugar) for energy. They determine the distribution of fat. Most importantly, steroids calm inflammation and rein in a misfiring immune system. In asthma, airways are so inflamed that they suddenly constrict when the slightest irritant lands on them. Prednisone quiets the inflammation and permits airways to expand. In ulcerative colitis, the colon is inflamed due to an assault by an errant immune system. Prednisone eases the inflammation and controls the misbehaving immune system. Steroids as drugs are powerful medicines, and they have powerful side effects when they are taken by mouth for long periods and in high doses. They cause bone thinning. They can cause muscle breakdown. They delay healing. They cause fat to leave arms and legs and settle in the face and upper torso. Sometimes, they are the only drugs that can turn the tide in the patient’s favour, and the side effects have to be tolerated until the illness is controlled." **************************** Megan, that is a good question. Personally, I experienced a calming of my cytokines (immune system products, also called inflammation markers) when taking ivermectin. Ivermectin is a known cytokine inhibitor. But I also think my recent on-going experiment with Vit C has lowered my cytokine levels, and woken up my immune system in other ways. There are also many foods, mentioned in the first link above, that calm the immune system. I don't believe that steroids is the only way, nor do I believe that "they are the only drugs that can turn the tide in the patient’s favour, and the side effects have to be tolerated until the illness is controlled", as stated in the second link. The side-effects of steroids are well known and have been known for some time. I wonder why anyone would put up with the side effects of strong drugs if they could obtain the same results by changing their diet and not experiencing side effects that may have long term health consequences? ![]() In many years of animal work, I was always dismayed when practicing vets would always reach for the prednisone for cats who had 'flea allergy dermatitis". For one thing, there is no such illness as flea allergy dermatitis, and secondly, when cats were not given prednisone, but instead, simply put on a whole food diet (no commercial cat foods), they got better in a few months. Of course, all the vets would then say that the 'illness' was going to resolve anyway, but the steroids would have hastened the recovery, if they had been given. The long course of prednisone injections were very expensive, too. And in some cases, the symptoms returned weeks or months after the injection course was finished. This would sometimes result in another one or sometimes, two, lengthy courses of prednisone injections.... until the immune system was finally and completely vanquished. These were the cats that later developed cancers of various sorts or succumbed to illnesses like feline upper respiratory illness -for which they had been vaccinated against. ![]() Sometimes, conventional medicine has a lot invested in being right, even when they aren't. ![]() Last edited by skylark99; July 6th, 2011 at 04:40 PM. |

| I am man hear me roar in numbers to big to ignore, or so the song goes. We seem to see many women with mates, male mates that for some reason have little to NO symptoms, but believe me THEY HAVE THIS. I have had this for 39 years with little to no symptoms but then I got into a car accident, I had a injury in my shoulder, the doctors started to give me injection after injection of steroids into the shoulder, soon after I started to have real bad issues that I never had before, roseace and my face looked like a apple. Then it started to break out, went to the dermatologist, he gave me more steroids, they worked for a while then my heart started to pump like mad like I was gonna blow up. I found out quickly the steroids were to fault, When I finally quit the steroids my face just went wild, soon my arms showed lesions, it was more than I could handle. It took YEARS almost 5 to beat off this mess. It came to the point where steroid supressed my immune system so much that this thing took over, I feel that the steroids were responsable for the outbreak, if it was not for the steroids I may have went on with very little to no symptoms. Steroids suppress immune responce, look at it any way you like but in the end the reason you will not have a huge red zit is because immune responce is shut off, swelling is immune responce, swelling draws a host of items to the injury site, steroids tell them not to come false alarm. | Thank you Skylark for the post. I know that steroids are not the preferred choice and I have been trying to eat foods for the past month or so to help with inflammation plus taking vit C but apparently, my body is not cooperating. The inflammation is affecting many organs. I stopped taking an OVC anti-inflammatory like Advil because it was causing bleeding. Now, my esophagus is so inflamed that it's making it difficult to eat and the treatment is steroids. I have been avoiding them even though every doctor keeps telling me I need steroids but now I'm afraid that I may have no choice. TCM gave me some great advice on helping the inflammation with herbs. The problem I have is that I need something that will help right away before it gets worse... something to calm the immune so I can get it under control. I was hoping someone could tell me what steroids do to people with Morgellons and why we are told to avoid them. |

| Baraka, I must have been posting at the same time as you. So in your case, the steroids made the M symptoms come out because they suppressed your immune system? So I will probably get lesions? I know that it's not a good idea to suppress the immune system and that mine is overreacting because it's fighting something and I don't want to stop it from fighting it. It's so confusing! |
