Default Computer equipment and bugs

I was noticing that I got much itchier and felt more biting when I sat at my computer so I disconnected my laptop, all my peripherals (back-up drives, cords, surge protectors, external speakers and webcam) and put them in an empty sealed metal hamper with moth balls (the kind with Paradichlorobenzene) for a little more than 24 hours to kill the bugs living in them.

Seems to have worked. I was a little scared it would eat away at my equipment but the moth balls weren't sitting directly on anything and everything thankfully works. Also, there doesn't seem to be residue smells although I've heard that plastic can absorb the odors (but haven't done the research on that).

Anyone else have any other suggestions for things that work on sensitive equipment?

Vinegar works well for me.And keeping the Tower inside a cupboard.
It is also the radiation given out by the moniter and all the wireless stuff effecting us.

Carla, how do you use the vinegar? Spray it on?
What confounds me is how to keep them from the keyboard. I don't know if vacuuming really gets them all out.

I use straight vinegar on one of those fibercloths , Zara.
I forget what they are called now.
I would keep my keyboard covered with clear plastic when I wasn't using it.
Jo posted something good about cleaning Keyboards.I can't find it now but will tomorrow and post it here.

I'd forgotten about Jo's thread Keyboard Super Clean until you mentioned it Carla. I did a search and found it for you:

Haha! That took balls to put the keyboard in the dishwasher.
Here I was fretting over putting things in with moth balls.

Thanks TC.I should of read this thread again before I searched.
I had one of those flexible keyboards for a while. It was enclosed in plastic and could be wiped easily.
It wasn't expensive and may be worth a try if anyone has fibers exiting their fingertips.

Default computer equipment and bugs

Hi, I'm new...I would never have thought of washing a keyboard. I'll have to try it. I'm moving in a couple of weeks to a nice clean, hopefully bug-free place, and was planning to ditch my keyboard and mouse and replace them.
I've been practising typing through cling-wrap, and although I'm not yet up to speed, it's working fine. I wrapped my black keyboard in a single layer of cling-wrap and tucked it under to tighten it a little. It will be easier to see the keys with a light colored keyboard. But I can toss the cling-wrap in the trash at the end of the evening or even replace it more often if it looks like it has things on it. And it's a cheap enough fix. Wish they were all this cheap!
