If fruit flies have the potential to make fibers then it stands to reason that some parasites at certain stages might be capable of this as well. In fact there is some evidence of this process within leishmania lesions. Although there is some doubt fruit flies will ever produce enough of the required protein to make fibers one has to wonder if parasites can get around this by using the proteins found in mammals which produce keratin. Keratin is in hair and that could be used by a parasite to make a very strong fiber indeed. 2manyfibers had some interesting posts about keratin and fibers.

There's a lot potentials that science is just becoming aware of in the natural world. No doubt there are many unknown or poorly studied parasites which may parasitize humans, capable of spinning fibers as a natural protection for stages of its growth within the body. Perhaps one of those unknown parasites is what is behind our strange symptoms.

I'd be interested in finding out if there are any fruit fly symbiote besides bacteria. Also, a lab that doesn't clean might not be too careful about its samples. It makes me wonder what they might have had with the fruit fly. Very interesting find, Jim.
