Because of widespread coverage in the media and on the Internet, there are an increasing number of patients presenting to dermatologists. We present three patients who believed that they had fibers in their skin. We offer a discussion of delusions of parasitosis to demonstrate similarities between these conditions. It has been suggested by a limited number of healthcare providers that an unknown infectious agent underlies this symptom complex yet no available evidence supports this assertion. Laboratory values that would be reflective of an infectious process (e.g. elevated white blood cells, sedimentation rate, C reactive protein) are routinely normal and biopsies often reflect only nonspecific findings such as acute and chronic inflammation with erosion or ulceration. Patients with Morgellons disease generally lack insight into their disease and reject the need for psychiatric help. The goal is to build trust and refrain from minimizing what the patient experiences. Attentive examination of the patient's skin and fragments they present is necessary to rule out a true underlying pathologic process and to establish a trusting relationship. A supportive, non-confrontational approach is ideal. The patient is best treated by a team of practitioners of several specialties, including dermatologists, psychiatrists, and counselors. | OMG Kmar! Are we going backwards???? This article has it's head going up it's butt! I can't believe that the Medical Professionals are still blowing us off. "Patients with Morgellons disease generally lack insight into their disease and reject the need for psychiatric help." Thanks for the heads up. Love to you, itwl, ~jonsi

| Yeah, I know... if there was a pharmaceutical drug to "cure" Morgellons, we would all be healthy. The Medical Profession has no answers because big Pharma has no "cure". After all, MD means doctor of medicine... ![]() However, a lot of us are healthier because of homeopathic & natural medicine. | I don't think Big Pharma would find a cure. They may produce an expensive "band aid" to minimize symptoms. It is hard to believe that a cure would be found for anyting, Big Pharma would go broke if people were cured.

| I think that many things work for different people . maybe drugs maybe homo everyone has different dna and other things going on. Have found some things work and some dont. Like dr Harvey says taking drugs at first he found too help those people. I went too an eye doctor last week after my eye problems were so bad. she put me on doxyclincine(spelling) for 3 months. and that has gotten rid of a lot of the white things around my eyes in a week. she could see the bubbles in my eye from fluid I have had just pouring out of my eyes it was not a clear but a film more or less. I still have the black specs coming on my face I will see a derm at hopkins on friday and ask him about fungus and these specs. so I think there are no right or wrong answers on here. just what ever works for that individual sammy |

| Oh no, not another "It's all in your heads" piece. Why is it so hard for these people to actually remain open minded to the possibility that what we are experiencing isn't delusional? Why are they so quick to say we are mental cases, especially with not knowing us, or anything about us? They all swear an oath to do no harm, yet every time they tell a patient (they have known all but 5 minutes )that they are a mental case they do extreme harm to that person. I know, as that has been my experience in seeking help for this issue! Needless to say I don't look for, or ask for, help of any kind from the medical community regarding this issue. I've learned my lesson well! |
