 MTBE and Remediation Products One Cause of Condition ? MTBE was used in the gasoline supply from 1979 through 2006 and is still in use in some locations- such as Indian Reservations. | MTBE mandated use to clean air- did the opposite & more Because California consumed the greatest amount of MTBE due to the fact the state has the greatest number of vehicles, the citizens were first to notice the effects and complain to Politicians. Instead of reducing smog- it increased it and in addition, it polluted the water and soil as well. One particular scenario explains this clearly. | UC Davis had warned of the dangers of MTBE http://toxics.ucdavis.edu/public/mtb...pt1-errata.pdf Go to page 2,3,4,5,6,7 and 11 at above link for information on how the MTBE eats through the underground storage tanks and pipes (used to transport the gasoline with the MTBE in it). The gasoline additive, MTBE, ate through the underground storage tanks at gasoline stations located above Lake Tahoe. The MTBE, which is 'wetter than water' flowed downhill to pollute the lake and soil. Because MTBE and it's daughter component, TBA, becomes a gas and returns to the air, only to cycle back into the water and ground. |
