An interesting discussion (as far as it goes), but it seems this doctor is only adding to the probability that more people with Morgellons symptoms will be diagnosed with DOP. I disagree with adding in bi-polar or obessive-compulsive disorder as standard symptoms of this disease as I am fairly sure many do not have either of these problems. It may be more common in those with Morgellons, as I believe even Harvey mentioned this as a possible symptom in some, but I did not hear him say that was true of everyone he saw who had Morgellons. Not only does this doctor say these mental disorders are a symptom of Morgellons he then goes on to say that many have also been diagnosed with DOP. Any ordinary medical doctor is probably going to view this discussion as being a fairly strong suggestion of DOP. After all, every Morgellons patients is bi-polar or obessive-compulsive.

I agree TCM with your viewpoint. This is a physical sytmeatic disease not a mental one. The NIH says it IS linked to Lyme Disease. It does NOT say it is a resulat of ANY mental disorders.

If left unchecked it CAN damage and make physical changes to how the brain functions. The brain is part of an entire system the entire system can be broken down.

This is always the "reason" for any illness which cannot be explained. Used to be cigarettes.

As horrible as this disese is, the first thing I thought was, "oh no!!, not another illness doctors don't believe in".

I went through all this mental illness crap when fibromyalia hit me bad. For people who have gone to school for many years, how is it they can not understand that depression and/or anxiety usually "FOLOWS" any chronic illness.

Then there's all the surveys they did for FMS patients; are you depressed, were you ever abused as a child, etc.

If they did these same surveys for people which they know the underlying cause of their illness, i.e. cancer, or any other disease, they would then find many people of all diseases and illnesses were abused in their childhood or may have suffered some traumatic disorder.

I'll bet there are a good % of people who get the common cold were abused as a child. This is an issue that just makes my blood bubble. OhOh, now I got anger too

in fact, many times the underlying cause of depression/anxiety in some or many patients lies in the manner in which they are treated by the medical society and the fears exerienced by this type approach. Such as intimidation, fear of no help, called a malingereer or hypocondriac, DOP, attention seeking, drug seeker, druggie, just plain dismissed as a low life nobody with the "hurry up and send the next one in" attitude "so my year end appraisal shows how much $ I brought in".

I use to audit charts and I've seen the notes for the clinician on the charts- This patient does not have insurance. Will you see them? Then there are 2 boxes, 1 has YES by it and the other NO. You can guess which one gets checked most.

P.S.-I have to add that this is not intended to mean the entire medical community. There ae those who are absolutely wonderful and I always make sure I let them know just how much I appreciate them, such as sending them flowers on my birthday because this is a day to do things which please you and it pleases me to express my appreciation.
