Has anyone here ever had or known anyone to have a black tongue?? My roomie just noticed his tongue has turned black. He also has a cough that won't quit; I am suspecting a fungal infection. He is trying to make an appt with an ENT right now. He has Morgellons, but is in denial most of the time. I have googled "black tongue" and there are some things, but none of them relate to Morgellons, and I believe that this is behind it. Two years ago his hair was as white as Bill Clinton's. It has gradually been turning "charcoal" in clumps, and is now 1/2 - 3/4 charcoal. SS

Hi SS, Is it hairy? I know the mayo clinic has a bit about hairy black tongue on their website. Is he on any meds (think i got black tongue on itraconazole) or has he taken a Pepto Bismol chewable tablet last night? if not, yeh could be fungal - best of luck to him Jo xxx

Jo - He doesn't take any meds, but uses Listerine which could upset the balance in his mouth. I saw that article on Mayo site. Be honest with you, I didn't get close enough to tell you if it's "hairy" or not. I'm freaked out. SS

I know a little about it and like Carla I have seen posts on it too. Here is the Mayo clinic article regarding it with a picture of it: Black, hairy tongue: What causes it? - MayoClinic.com . Hope this helps. (LC)

| You stated he Used mouthwash and perhaps it killed too many bacteria causing funal growth? Please keep us updated! __________________________________________________ ______ Hairy tongue is often referred to as black hairy tongue (lingua villosa nigra), but it may also appear brown, white, green, or pink - often due to secondary factors such as mouthwashes, breath mints, etc. The "hairy" areas are usually on the posterior (back) of the tongue and never involve the undersurface. Hairy tongue is not a harmful disorder, and is normally asymptomatic. Patients with hairy tongue often may develop a secondary infection of Candida albicans (thrush). It is unclear if hairy tongue itself is a predisposing factor, as the underlying causes of hairy tongue may also lead to the development of thrush. | Well, the doctor took some samples from his tongue and is sending them out for culturing. The most likely suspect is candida; he has a follow-up appointment in two weeks. On another note, Mr. Denial is now starting to spill the beans more and more. Last night he showed me a bump on his hand. Under all the skin, about the size of a small pea. He said he has three of those on his scalp. He cut himself the other day on his right wrist and has been putting some ointment and bandaids on it till it heals over a bit. This morning he played golf, and when he looked down at that hand he said it had tiny "sparkly" things right along where there's a large vein. I had never talked to him about the glittery stuff, and he was really surprised to hear that it was a common symptom. I think that black tongue is making an honest man of him. SS |
