The other day I heard on NPR radio station about this guy who just published this book titled ( I think) the "Internet is Fun". He gave out some of the secrets of running a web site. The number one thing that you have to do is have an adversary. The more people that argue and fight the more hits you have on your site = more advertising dollars. I thought this was very interesting. He also said that he would have different users name to keep it exciting. So I guess the lesson here is... don't take this stuff to seriously.

The argument has to be a specific type for it to have this effect. It's usually a he said she said type of of exchange with some abusive terms thrown in.

Generally it's not regarding the endorsement of a specific product but this type of dynamic can be used by stealth marketers on unattended forums to get attention for whatever they are selling. Again the dynamic has to be specific. This is where the evolution of the sock puppet comes in. What is needed is a 'member' that verbally abuses the target. Usually this abuse also comes with the abuser accusing the victim of the very same behavior that the abuser him/herself is committing.

The goal is the red herring everyone mentions. The victim starts focusing on defending him/herself while other team members continue to make positive remarks about a product while repeating the accusations the 'sock' makes. Repeat something often enough and people tend to start believing it. Meanwhile the static drives the product up in the googel ratings.

What these stealth marketers absolutely cannot tolerate is logical questions about the product because this introduces content outside of what they want to promote. The pattern is very easy to spot.
