| Jonsi - There is one baby, maybe 5 days old. When you click on the link, you have to wait a few moments for the live webcam to kick in. I keep the window open whenever I'm on the computer, and when I hear cheeping I maximize it. Some great sights of mom or dad feeding the youngster, who is growing by leaps & bounds! The other egg should hatch any time now, if it is viable. I used to breed birds, but lost my entire aviary because of this horrible thing... . Having them (15 years) was the best time of my life.SS |

| Jonsi - The baby is doing GREAT! Getting so big! I've had company for a few days and am not doing as much on the computer as usual, so I hadn't checked till just now. Can't see the egg right now, but I assume it's a dud or the parents opted to not incubate it. We have a Sandhill Crane family on the golf course where I play. Mommy, Daddy, and two babies, that are getting quite big, almost full size. Today I saw the family, but one of the kids was missing! I feared the worst - that it was hit by a golf ball. The parents were "screaming", I guess calling for the baby. Well, we came across the baby all by itself....parents still calling for him....I hope they get back together!! Sandhill Cranes The Sandhill Crane is one of the two Crane species that regularly occurs in the US. The other is the Whooping Crane (Grus americana). Several races of Sandhill Crane are recognized. Some races are migratory, others are sedentary. The Greater Sandhill Crane, shown here at Indiana's Jasper Pulaski Fish & Wildlife Refuge, breed in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota and parts of Canada and winter in Southern Georgia and Florida. ![]() Figure 1 - Sandhill Cranes The Greater Sandhill Crane, standing about 3.5 feet tall with a wingspan of 6 to 7 feet, is the largest race of Sandhill Cranes. During the fall migration, some 12,000 to 16,000 Cranes make Indiana their home. The highest population estimate of 32,000 individuals occurred in the 1991 migratory season. ![]() Figure 2 - Sandhill Cranes Stopover in Indiana SS |
