| Jonsi, My great Aunt Kay used to say that. Actually, she used to pull the pillow from my head and said, "if you want to sleep...go sleep on the beach!!!" (that was at 8 am) shudder. Well, Aunt Kay...THANKS! Thanks for bringing the grimms fairy tails to life! LOL |

| Good catch Carla. The true importance of vitamin D has only been recently recognized by most researchers and still doesn’t appear to be recognized by traditional medicine. Vitamin D is required for the body to absorb and use calcium properly and it also regulates blood pressure to some extent by regulating the renin / angiotensin cycle in the kidneys (the blood pressure medicines known as ACE inhibitors prevent the body from producing one of the enzymes needed to create angiotensin in the body – angiotensin constricts the blood vessels and is produced by the body as a response to low blood pressure / volume). I have seen it reported in several places that many Morgellons sufferers have a deficiency in vitamin D and one doctor in Florida (if I remember correctly) was basing a treatment protocol on vitamin D (I haven’t seen how successful the protocol has been). I posted some fairly detailed information on vitamin D in the following link (post #93 and a few posts after that have info on vitamin D, B vitamins and EFAs (essential fatty acids) as well): How Nutrition Can Effect Morgellons Vitamin D also appears to have a couple of additional properties that help in the prevention / treatment of cancer (and numerous studies support this). Vitamin D helps the body with cell differentiation and it mediates or regulates the proliferation of cells. The individual cells created by the body have to be specialized (or differentiated) for them to perform their intended functions properly. Cancer cells generally are not “differentiated” properly with some tumor cells basically not being programmed with the instructions for them to die off (normal cells die off and are replaced over time). This allows cancer cells to proliferate or spread rapidly (metastasize) and the body’s immune system can’t “keep up” with the spread of these cancerous cells – they spread faster than the immune system can kill them. The properties of vitamin D appear to help the body address both of these issues.. The next 3 links are reports of studies that indicate that vitamin D can help prevent and treat breast cancer. The last link (webMD) notes that a recent study didn’t support this but they also noted that the dose (400 IU) was likely not enough to make a difference (studies that don’t use enough of a given nutrient (or far more than safe amounts) are often sponsored by pharmaceutical companies in an effort to discourage people from taking natural supplements instead of prescription drugs). The US RDA for vitamin D is 400 IU but a growing body of research indicates that the body needs 800 to 1,000 IU daily to gain significant therapeutic benefit. Most estimates for optimum daily intake now range between 1,000 IU and 10,000 IU of vitamin D. Vitamin D Found To Stimulate A Protein That Inhibits The Growth Of Breast Cancer Cells STUDY SEES LINK BETWEEN VITAMIN D, BREAST CANCER PROGNOSIS -- , 10.3322/CA.2008.0014 -- CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians Study: Vitamin D May Not Prevent Breast Cancer The information in the next link provides a very comprehensive overview of vitamin D as a nutrient. It notes that vitamin D is proving to be a key nutrient for the prevention of many diseases including MS and several types of cancers. Here’s the link followed by a couple of brief excerpts: Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University Cancer Two characteristics of cancer cells are lack of differentiation (specialization) and rapid growth or proliferation. Many malignant tumors have been found to contain vitamin D receptors (VDR), including breast, lung, skin (melanoma), colon, and bone. Biologically active forms of vitamin D, such as 1,25(OH)2D and its analogs, have been found to induce cell differentiation and/or inhibit proliferation of a number of cancerous and noncancerous cell types maintained in cell culture (5 . Results of some, but not all, human epidemiological studies suggest that vitamin D may protect against various cancers.Breast Cancer A prospective study of women who participated in the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES I) found that several measures of sunlight exposure and dietary vitamin D intake were associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer 20 years later (72). More recently, a 16-year study of more than 88,000 women found that higher intakes of vitamin D were associated with significantly lower breast cancer risk in premenopausal women but not postmenopausal women (73). Garland et al. conducted a pooled, dose-response analysis of two case-control studies in which women with breast cancer had significantly lower plasma 25(OH)D levels compared to controls (74, 75). These authors reported that women with a 25(OH)D level of 52 ng/ml (130 nmol/L) experienced a 50% lower risk of developing breast cancer compared to women with 25(OH)D levels lower than 13 ng/mL (32.5 nmol/L) (76). The authors state that to obtain a 25(OH)D level of 52 ng/mL, around 4,000 IU of vitamin D3 would need to be consumed daily, or 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily plus very moderate sun exposure (76). Autoimmune Diseases Epidemiological studies have found that the prevalence of IDDM, MS, and RA increases as latitude increases, suggesting that lower exposure to UVB radiation and associated decreases in endogenous vitamin D synthesis may play a role in the pathology of these diseases. The results of several prospective cohort studies also suggest that adequate vitamin D intake may decrease the risk of autoimmune diseases. A prospective cohort study of children born in Finland during the year 1966 and followed for thirty years found that those who received supplemental vitamin D during the first year of life had a significantly lower risk of developing IDDM, while children suspected of developing rickets (severe vitamin D deficiency) during the first year of life had a significantly higher risk of developing IDDM (85). Vitamin D deficiency has also been implicated in MS. A recent case-control study in U.S. military personnel, including 257 cases of diagnosed MS, found that white subjects in the highest quintile of serum 25(OH)D (>99.1 nmol/L) had a 62% lower risk of developing MS (86). A relationship between this indicator of vitamin D status and MS was not observed in blacks or Hispanics, but the power to detect such an association was limited by small sample sizes and overall low serum 25(OH)D concentrations (86). In two large cohorts of U.S. women followed for at least ten years, vitamin D supplement use was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of developing MS (87). Similarly, postmenopausal women with the highest total vitamin D intakes were at significantly lower risk of developing RA after 11 years of follow-up than those with the lowest intakes (8 . Recently, it was exposed that many vitamin D test results over the last few years were completely inaccurate. Quest Diagnostics apparently decided to come up with its own testing method and didn’t bother to check the accuracy of the results before instituting it. Anyone that had their vitamin D levels checked in the last couple of years may want to have them retested. New York Times Exposes Vitamin D Testing Fraud - articles - articles.mercola.com The nation’s largest medical laboratory company, Quest Diagnostics, gave potentially erroneous results to thousands of people who had their vitamin D levels tested in the last two years. The company has already sent letters to thousands of doctors listing the patients who might have received questionable test results and is offering free retests. An erroneously high result could lead to vitamin D deficiency going undetected, and an erroneously low test result could possibly lead to a toxic overdose of vitamin D. When the Quest tests have been inaccurate, the reading has typically been too high. |

| Hey guys, I just got this in an email and wanted to share it, as it is just another confirmation of how important Vitamin D is. I have lot's of links saved from earlier in my illness, as the Vitamin D deficiency was one of the first things they found that actually validated my illness in any way. There is an epidemic of it in the states, and probably all over the world. I have been on prescription strength for almost two years, although the past couple months I haven't taken it as I should. ![]() Anyway, this is a link from Johns Hopkins: Johns Hopkins: Nutrition|Weight Control on vitamin D Hope you all are well!!! Love, Niecy ![]()
