The Maine Lyme Disease Research Laboratory in Portland reported that the increasing numbers of ticks carrying Lyme disease in southern Maine is directly related to the high numbers of deer there.

Lyme disease is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected deer tick, according to the American Lyme Disease Foundation. If not diagnosed and treated early, Lyme disease can develop into crippling symptoms that affect the joints, heart and nervous system.
This spring, the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society announced that the record number of Lyme disease cases in Maine is likely to rise.

Last year there were 237 confirmed cases of Lyme disease in Maine, up from less than 100 a decade ago, according to the state.
At the moment, Kantar said two eastern Maine communities are wrestling with the problems that come with too many deer: disease and traffic accidents.

ya know there are zero reported cases of lymes disease in colorado. but just because none are reported does not mean one can't have it.

Here is a link to the number of reported cases for Lyme's in the U.S. from 1980 - 1/13/07. Colorado has 10 reported cases of Lyme's, Utah has 47. Doctors in low-risk states should remain open-minded for testing as most people do travel and/or travel to high-risk areas.
