Real Data On Lyme Disease

Gov. M. Jodi Rell declared a three-point initiative last week directed at acquiring more precise data about the number of genuine cases of Lyme disease in Connecticut and improving public knowingness. State health regulations already call for physicians to report diagnoses of Lyme disease. Yet only a fraction are reported.

One problem is that preliminary test results for the disease positive or negative aren't always conclusive. Connecticut requires a clearer picture on the extent of actual cases. Mrs. Rell said the state health department has entered into an arrangement with Quest Diagnostics, the biggest provider of medical testing in Connecticut, to give officials the results of positive lab tests.

State health officials will get hold of the physicians in those cases to determine how many of the tests resulted in a diagnosis of Lyme disease. Officials are already setting up letters requesting clinical information on about 5,500 cases.

Well I think the true number of cases would be quite astounding in Conneticut. I think innnacurate testing, late detection, pressure from insurance companies, and very short course of antibiotics all that is needed is why so many cases go under reported. That is IF you even find a doctor. ??? (LC)
