| Lady C, A 7 year old girl was taken to a doctor and was diagnosed with ascending motor paralysis ( problem walking, unbalanced ) . Brain surgery was scheduled. In the hospital a nurse spotted a small tick embedded in the girls neck and removed it. The diagnosis was changed to Tick Paralysis. Tick Paralysis ... A chemical substance that attacks the nervous system (neurotoxin). The neurotoxin is secreted by the salivary gland of the tick. Extended exposurer to the toxin (by the carrier) will cause paralysis. | Ticks are one hell of pain for us humans. That's very interesting post there. Did you happen to get the name of the specific tick? That's the first I ever heard of Tick Paralysis. |

| I read this article a few years ago. I don't think they specified the specific tick involved. When I first began my research on these insects that were bugging me. I found that most symptom were related to tick bite in many ways. The flushed appearance being an allergic reaction to tick bite and the tick paralysis causing motor disorder. I'm not an entomologist but I know most of the insects now that attack man. WTG |

| WTG I did some research and was surprised to see its quite common actually. Tick paralysis (tick toxicosis) -- one of the eight most common tickborne diseases in the United States (1) -- is an acute, ascending, flaccid motor paralysis that can be confused with Guillain-Barre syndrome, botulism, and myasthenia gravis. Tick paralysis occurs worldwide and is caused by the introduction of a neurotoxin elaborated into humans during attachment of and feeding by the female of several tick species. Ticks attach to the skin to feed on blood. It is during this feeding process that the toxin enters the bloodstream. The resulting paralysis is ascending (starting in the lower body and moving up) and is similar to that seen in Guillain-Barre syndrome and opposite that seen in botulism and paralytic shellfish poisoning (descending). |

| here is the section of the american lyme disease association talking about tick paralysis: http://www.aldf.com/TickParalysis.shtml .here is the wilkepedia link discussing tick paralysis: http://en.wikepedia.org/wiki/Tick_paralysis . here is the medline plus link to tick paralysis: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/001359.htm . here is the stop ticks link about tick paralysis: http://www.stopticks.org/ticks/paralysis.asp . here is a link to PNDF, a parasite which gives neurotoxins to humans: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih/entrez/query...s=4597229&dopt . i also read that the treatment for tick paraslysis is to remove the tick. there is no tick on me at this time, so i do not suffer from this particular malady at this time. however i KNOW it is because of neurotoxins. |
