Nanotechnology Coming to Your Store: Recall the Hard Lessons from GMOs, and Let’s Get it Right this Time Summary posted by Meridian on 9/1/2009 Source: FoodProcessing.com Author: Ronald Wernette The article, by Ronald Wernette, a partner with the law firm of Bowman and Brooke LLP, argues that the food processing industry needs to get it right the first time when it comes to food products containing nanotechnology, and avoid the public concerns and missteps that have plagued genetically engineered food. He says that currently the number of food products using nanotechnology is relatively small, but that hundreds of research projects are underway and tens of millions of dollars are being spent in a global race to apply nanotechnologies to food production, processing and packaging. Experts predict that nanotechnology will be incorporated into US$20 billion worth of consumer food products by 2010. But he also says that no one really knows what to expect in the next few years as there is no authoritative accounting of nanofood products and their associated potential risks and benefits. He says that one "...of the problems with accurately estimating nanotechnology innovations is food and beverage companies (and their suppliers) may be wary to apply the nanotechnology label to a new product, aware that a significant segment of the public does not want its food "engineered" -- bio, nano, or otherwise." Unlike the genetically modified food industry, which decided to commercialize first and respond to consumer concerns later, the nanofood industry should move to aggressively identify and address health and environmental concerns of nanotechnology applications before products reach the market, Wernette says. | Yep! I agree SS! Nanotech Frontiers: Next 10 Years Will See Huge Growth for Nanotech - Web Extras - ASSEMBLY Unfortunately most people believe that all food is safe. Personally, I stay away from processed foods and deli meats, bread and fast food chains, etc. This is a HUGE subject SS is talking about. One that we should pay attention to. | I pray for the day that they get those seeds out of the SEED VAULT, and go back to nature. Before they "messed" with food, all the seeds and variations were frozen away in a fault. They call it the doomsday vault. I feel like doomsday has arrived. Human, Animal, and the general health of Mother Earth is worse now than ever before in History and man can blame himself. |

| Hi kmar, There are plenty of seeds out of the seed vault. They are called heirloom seeds and small (large too?) farmers grow these plants every year. Check out your local farmers market for organic food and food grown close to your home. This is the best way to support good food. This is interesting (from the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle) Welcome! : Slow Food USA ~jonsi
