| First of all, we should define what contrails are. The word contrail is short for "condensation trail," and these patterns can sometimes be seen trailing behind aircraft as they streak across the sky. Contrails are really nothing more than man-made clouds. They are made up of particles of crystalized water vapor, also known as ice, that condense around the aircraft's exhaust. However, contrails are not specific to any particular kind of aircraft or speed range. They can be formed by military or civil aircraft, piston- or jet-powered planes, subsonic or supersonic vehicles, aircraft or rockets. The type of vehicle is irrelevant, but what is key to the formation of contrails is atmospheric conditions. Contrail formation is dependent upon the temperature, relative humidity, and pressure at which the vehicle is flying as well as the ratio of moisture to heat produced by the vehicle's engine. In particular, the ambient air must be at low temperature and low vapor pressure. Vapor pressure is the pressure of water vapor within the atmosphere. The ambient air mixes with the hot, humid exhaust because of turbulence generated by the exhaust flow. If that mixture happens to be saturated or supersaturated with moisture, a contrail will form. The following figure illustrates the conditions under which clouds or contrails form. The blue line represents the saturation vapor pressure of ice versus air temperature. If the vapor pressure equals or exceeds this line at a given temperature, the water vapor will condense to form ice crystals. ![]() The points labeled A and B represent two hypothetical conditions, both unsaturated. Let's assume that point A is the temperature and vapor pressure of the ambient air at the aircraft's cruising altitude. Point B is the conditions within the aircraft's exhaust. As the two mix, the temperature and pressure equalize. If the final conditions intersect or lie above the blue line, the mixture becomes saturated and a contrail will form. Otherwise, the mixture remains unsaturated and dissipates. Eventually, all clouds and contrails will dissipate, but the length of time they endure is related to the atmospheric conditions as well as the strength of the winds. If the contrail is formed when the local atmosphere is dry, it may dissipate rapidly. But if the atmosphere is near saturation, it will exist for a long period of time, perhaps spreading or mixing with naturally-formed clouds until it is unrecognizable as a contrail. It is for this latter reason that many climatologists have become concerned about the increase in air travel over recent decades. It has been estimated that cloud cover may increase by up to 20% in some heavily-traveled areas due to man-made contrails. This increase could have a significant effect on the climate in those regions since clouds block solar radiation. Designers of modern stealth aircraft must also be concerned about contrails since they can easily give away a plane's location to an observant enemy. While methods have been developed to inject (usually toxic) chemicals into a vehicle's exhaust to eliminate contrails, it's usually far more preferable to simply increase or decrease altitude until the atmospheric conditions no longer support their formation. |

| Steve how can a still photograph prove anything .Did those contrails linger all day ? Use your eyes and look up.I know that California is more sprayed than anywhere else. |

| Carla dear, the article I posted explains why contrails can linger in the sky, I think the phrase "a long period of time" could constitute "all day", would it make any difference to you if I found an article that said they could linger all day? I kind of doubt that it would because you guys just have it ingrained in your mind that someone is up in those planes pumping something bad into the atmosphere as part of some kind of conspiracy. | Hi Steve, As you know, I live in the high desert at 7,500 ft. The humidity here is very low (10-15%), dew point 30 during the summer months when the temp is 95 degrees. The sky is very clear. It doesn't make any sense that when the atmospheric conditions are consistent from day to day, (con-trails evaporate a few "inches" behind the plane at the rate the plane is flying) that suddenly the skies are filled with hundreds of chem-trails. These con-trails do not dissipate like con-trails do. I don't know where you live Steve. Maybe there's a lot of pollution or humidity where you live and you can't see the clear blue sky. Check it out if you have a clear day. It seems that they spray aerosols on a schedule. You might have to observe the sky for several weeks in a row before they spray the aerosols. Notice the x and tic-tac-toe patters when the planes start spraying. Soon the chem-trails join each other to form a haze that falls to earth. This is very different from con-trails. | How can you say that contrails evaporate, it all depends on the atmospheric conditions, they are nothing more than clouds, do clouds just evaporate? No they don't, well they would if the conditions were right. |

| whatever Steve. You don't live in an arid climate. No clouds, short con-trails, no chem-trails . No clouds, short con-trails, long chem-trails. Not all of the planes shoot out aerosols. There is a VOR 15 miles away from my house and commercial planes fly the same pattern every day. I was married to a IFR pilot. I know about IFR and VORs. VOR (Very High Frequency Omnirange) These commercial planes fly at similar altitudes and flight plans each day. I watch the weather. I know what humidity is what condensation is. Chem-trails are very different from con-trails. Check out the sky. ~jonsi

| Jonsi, in your opinion, why would "THEY", as the con man Kevin Trudeau would put it, be pumping chemicals into the atmosphere, and I hope you don't say to kill us all because that would leave you with no credibility whatsoever. |
