Default Doctors say "avoid GMO foods"

This is an excellent newsletter on general health issues:

PCC Sound Consumer | News bites, July 2009

Below is just the GMO food section of the newsletter:

Doctors say “avoid GM food”
The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) is calling for a moratorium on genetically modified (GM) foods and for physicians to urge their patients, the medical community, and the public to avoid them when possible. The AAEM is calling for long-term independent studies and labeling, citing serious health risks associated with GM foods including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system.
The academy says, “There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation,” as defined by recognized scientific criteria. (Comfood listserv/Tufts University)

Well, we already have 80% of our foods from the supermarket GM'd. How do they expect us to avoid it now?

Even organic vegetables....Do they have to buy their seeds from Monsanto or can they buy exclusive organic seeds from some other source.

Hindsight......gotta love it.

Duh, football!

How come the USA is the only country not required to label foods containing GMOs?

Did you know that Obama has endorsed Monsanto? Monsanto = GMO

Thanks SS for bringing this thread back to our attention

While many of us are researching "M", homeopathic/natural medicine & organic foods help us "M" out. We might not have the answer to what causes this "M", but paying attention to food makes a big difference.

ps. I still have a big issue with Randy Wymore. He told me that food has nothing to do with "Morgellons". pm me, k?

Default Avoid GMOs

Five Simple Ways: Avoid GMOs

Five Simple Ways: Avoid GMOs

Do you mind eating genetically modified foods? Did you know that more than 2/3s of all processed foods contain genetically modified (GM) ingredients? What's more, none of these GM foods are labeled as being genetically engineered. There are, however, 5 simple ways you can avoid the thousands of genetically modified products on the grocery shelves.

1 Buy Certified Organic
  • Buy food products that have the USDA Certified organic seal on their packaging. A food product can only bear the USDA Certified organic seal if it has been certified organic and contains at least 95% of organically-produced ingredients. The remaining 5% of the product is specifically required to be non-GMO. While this may change in the future, the USDA's organic certification makes it a fairly safe bet that that product will be free of GMOs.

2 Shop Local Sources
  • Buy locally grown and produced food from your local mom-and-pop farmer, which are commonly available at farmer's markets. Currently, the genetic engineering of crops largely remains a technology for large-scale, corporate "factory farms." Produce from small and family-scale organic farms typically have yet to be genetically modified.
  • By buying locally sourced food, you not only get to avoid GMO foods but also support your farming neighbors and boost your local economy.

3 Look for Products Labeled "Non-GMO"
  • Shop for products that bear the non-GMO label or read "GMO free." This includes meat products such as beef, dairy and poultry. Livestock are commonly raised on GMO feed and/or may be injected with growth hormones such as rbGH.

4 Avoid Brands Containing At Risk Ingredients
  • Avoid foods that contain ingredients or derivatives from corn, soy, canola and cottonseed, which are the four most widely grown genetically modified crops. It can be particularly difficult to avoid cooking oils that contain GM ingredients, because most of them are blended with cottonseed or canola. Unless the label specifically indicates that the contents are non-GMO, it is highly likely that it contains GMO ingredients. Similarly, soy milk, tacos and corn chips are likely to contain GMOs unless labeled otherwise.
5 Use the Non-GMO Project Shopping Guide
  • Download and shop using the "Non-GMO Shopping Guide" offered by the non-profit Center for Food Safety (See the Reference Section below). You can print it out at home on a regular 8.5 x 11 paper or download it as an iPhone application. The shopping guide includes a list of products that are truly non-GMO, as well as tips on how to avoid buying food products that are most likely made from or contain GMOs.
  • The Non-GMO Project offers third party verification of food products that have been produced in accordance with rigorous best practices for avoiding GMOs. You can visit the Project's website to look up participating brands and companies that have enrolled their products in the Non-GMO Project Verification Program.

Note... in addition to the above guidelines, these labels can be used to assure you are buying Non-GMO.

Labels on Meat and Dairy Products

Natural This label means “minimally processed” and that the meat can’t have any artificial colors, artificial flavors, preservatives, or any other artificial ingredients in it. Animals can still be given antibiotics or growth enhancers.
Grass Fed This term means that the animals are fed solely on a diet of grass or hay and have access to the outdoors. Grass fed beef has been shown to have more of the healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
Free-Range This means that the animals weren’t confined to a cage and had access to the outdoors.
No Hormones Added This term is allowed when animals are raised without the use of any added growth hormones.
Do not consume meat if it does not have the above labels listed on it.

Labels on Fish

Farm Raised This is usually applies to farm raised fish. May be G.M.O. or fed G.M.O. feed such as G.E. corn. Avoid.
Wild Caught This refers to the fish being caught in the wild. However it may be G.M.O. fish that was farmed then released. A common practice to stock rivers and bodies of water.
Wild Wild fish hatched and grown in natural bodies of water.
Only eat wild fish.

Livestock and fish fed G.M.O. pose the same risks as if you have eaten G.M.O.

be aware that there is legislation against the required labeling of GMO, including the genetically modified Salmon about to hit our markets.

Default GMO's

I just recently began eating mostly organic foods and never really thought that it might make a difference in the way I felt so soon. But it did. Plus, it's more satisfying, which I never expected. I snack less as a result. Makes me wonder if they're not putting additives in processed food that actually makes it less satisfying so you'll eat more at a sitting and snack more often.

Default Groundbreaking Study Shows Roundup Link to Birth Defects

Groundbreaking Study Shows Roundup Link to Birth Defects

Glyphosate
, the active ingredient in the world's best-selling weedkiller Roundup, causes malformations in frog and chicken embryos at doses far lower than those used in agricultural spraying and well below maximum residue levels in products presently approved in the European Union. This is reported in research (1) published by a group around Professor Andrés Carrasco, director of the Laboratory of Molecular Embryology at the University of Buenos Aires Medical School and member of Argentina's National Council of Scientific and Technical Research.

Carrasco was led to research the embryonic effects of glyphosate by reports of high rates of birth defects in rural areas of Argentina where Monsanto's genetically modified "Roundup Ready" (RR) soybeans are grown in large monocultures sprayed from airplanes regularly. RR soy is engineered to tolerate Roundup, allowing farmers to spray the herbicide liberally to kill weeds while the crop is growing.

At a press conference during the 6th European Conference of GMO Free Regions in the European Parliament in Brussels Carrasco said, "The findings in the lab are compatible with malformations observed in humans exposed to glyphosate during pregnancy." Reporting of such problems started in 2002, two years after large scale introduction of RR soybeans in Argentina. The experimental animals share similar developmental mechanisms with humans. The authors concluded that the results raise "concerns about the clinical findings from human offspring in populations exposed to Roundup in agricultural fields." Carrasco added, "I suspect the toxicity classification of glyphosate is too low. In some cases this can be a powerful poison."

The maximum residue level (MRL) allowed for glyphosate in soy in the EU is 20 mg/kg. The level was increased 200-fold from 0.1 mg/kg to 20 mg/kg in 1997 after GM RR soy was commercialized in Europe. Carrasco found malformations in embryos injected with 2.03 mg/kg glyphosate. Soybeans can contain glyphosate residues of up to 17mg/kg.
In August 2010 Amnesty International reported that an organized mob violently attacked people who gathered to hear Carrasco talk about his research in the town of La Leonesa, Chaco province. Witnesses implicated local agro-industry figures in the attack.

Carrasco is also the co-author of a report, "GM Soy: Sustainable? Responsible?" released on September 16 by a group of international scientists. The report documents a bulk of evidence in scientific studies on the harmful health and environmental impacts of GM RR soy and Roundup.

This report is released together with the testimonies of people who have suffered from such spraying. Viviana Peralta, a housewife from San Jorge, Santa Fe, Argentina was hospitalized together with her baby after Roundup spraying from planes flying near her home. Peralta and other residents launched a lawsuit that resulted in a regional court ban on the spraying of Roundup and other agrochemicals near houses.
