Stomach acid assessment

Hi Folks,

TCM and I were talking about whether people are tending to have too much or too little stomach acid.

I'm taking Omeprazole - which are gastro-resistant granules usually given to reduce stomach acid, indigestion, ulcers etc. but my docs prescribed them to help stop Chlamydia P from stealing my energy....I dont yet know the science behind this one.

I dont know about energy levels - my minds firing on all cylinders!! but its also given me a HUGE appetite. So I'm hoping to put on some weight.

I enjoyed this information Jo, as this home test looks like a good pretest to determine stomach acid levels. I wondered how any doctor could assume that folks with morgellons had high stomach acid levels without doing some testing first. Sometimes low stomach acid symptoms can masquerade as high stomach acid symptoms, especially in the elderly, who most often have low stomach acid, but a greater amount of heartburn to match. So I think that being able to do a simple test like this at home is wonderful to know about. Then if one has questions about how to proceed more definitive testing might be the next step.

To perform this test: mix one quarter teaspoon of baking soda in eight ounces of cold water, first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything except water. Drink the baking soda solution. Time how long it takes to belch. Time up to five minutes. If you have not belched within five minutes stop timing anyway.

If your stomach is producing adequate amounts of hydrochloric acid you should probably belch within two to three minutes. Early and repeated belching may be due to excessive stomach acid. Belching results from the acid and baking soda reacting to form carbon dioxide gas. The Heidelberg or Gastrocap tests can be employed for confirmation of the results of this test.

This test reminds me of what my beer drinking friends would do the morning after. After a big burp, never mind.... they'd start in with another beer.
