Recently there was mention of using lye soap for something on one of the threads, but when I tried to search, the word "lye" was too short to include in the search according to the forum. So I got every thread that mentioned "soap". Not helpful. Does anyone remember what thread it was on or remember what was said about it?

Sorry, I don't know where the thread is, but lye soap is great. I grew up helping my mother make lye soap. We used it for everything: bathing, laundry, cleaning etc. We made old fashioned lye soap, not the stuff found in Ace Hardware today. There are websites called Granny's Lye Soap and others as well. You will find the newly fashioned lye soap and and one site that has the old- fashioned lye soap. There are lye soap posts on Yahoo Finding 1 Cure under g_mrrsn. healing hope and others. The lye soap we made was made from lye and water and no preservative lard. I have not made soap in years, but I am trying to find Mother's recipe. For the lye. mother used wood ashes. She would let water run through and strain the ashes. The water and thel ard was then mixed. We made it in a big black pot. I always had ot stir the soap. It was allowed to cool. Then mother poured it into frames dad made for her. When it hardened, it was cut into bars or chunks and dried throughly. I remember it was great for our skin and readily cleared up any sores we had. Oh my! Fond memories of my mother. Some Mexican food stores render the lard to make meat skins. They will sell you the lard with no preservatives. Hope this helps. Gator

What a special memory of your mom! I found Granny's or Grandmother's lye soap yesterday and bought a bar because of what I'd read on the thread. Then couldn't remember what it was! If it's good for healing, maybe it's good for keeping the monsters quiet. I'll try it in the shower. What's it like to wash hair?
