Default Probiotics "cure" child

This is an article about a baby in the UK that had a severe stomach bloating problem since he was born. Doctors had basically given up trying to figure out what was causing it. The child was still having severe problems at 11 months but the mother had started reading up on digestive problems. She tried giving him a probiotic drink and he no longer has the bloating problem.

I think this story highlights a couple of things. One, the mother had to rely on herself to do the research to help her child when the doctors had simply been flummoxed by the child’s condition and had basically given up on him. The “cure” was very simple once she realized the doctors had the child on antibiotics that were killing the “good” bacteria in his gut.

Secondly, the doctor seemed concerned about the “safety” of giving the child the probiotics when it was the antibiotics he had been giving him that was apparently causing the problem to begin with. It seems ironic to me that what helped the child would appear to cause the doctor concern about safety while what hurt the child to begin with was apparently considered to be perfectly safe. I think it just shows the typical mindset of doctors today – they really are so brainwashed by their training that they literally cannot think outside of what they were taught in medical school. The answer was very simple but medical school apparently didn’t teach them about antibiotics killing off beneficial bacteria or that they could be replaced easily with probiotics.

Here’s the link with a brief excerpt – the article shows pictures of the child before and after which is also pretty interesting:

How I cured my baby's mystery illness that had baffled doctors with a simple yoghurt drink | Mail Online

When she explored the antibiotics that Riley had been given by doctors, she discovered that one of them kills natural bacteria in the body.

As a last resort, she decided to try and reintroduce this bacteria to her son by feeding him bottles of probiotics.

Riley's condition was 'cured' after he began drinking Yakult yoghurt drinks
'I gave him Yakult and he was fine within the first couple of days of him having it,' she said.

Dr Henry Mulenga, a member of the Royal College of Paediatricians, with a special interest in gastroenterology, said: 'We are beginning to hear more and more of these type of stories. In my view it is very possible.

'There is no doubt that some conditions can be improved by introducing healthy bacteria.

'Many parents may feel that is the case. The difficulty we have with very small babies is whether it is entirely safe to do so.'

2many, that is an awesome post!! Ain't it great to have a mother that cares?? If it wasn't for that young mom, that little boy may not would even be here right now, and the sad thing is I am sure the doc treating the baby never lost one wink of sleep!!!

God knows we can't depend very much on the medical profession anymore. I sure miss my Mama......

Good post

Default Kefir

Kefir, a natural pro-biotic, can be found in health food stores. I buy organic kefir (raspberry flavor for me, peach for my daughter). It tastes kinda like yogurt and is sold in the milk section. Tastes great and it gets rid of stomach problems & leaky gut syndrome.

Itwl,

This just goes to show they don't know anything about how the body works .All they care about is if it can be treated with their drugs.

Pro-biotics have been around for a while. I sold a ton of them when I was kid and worked in a health store. They were actually quite popular but also quite expensive too.

carla, Kefir is similar to yogurt, it's a live culture. So I don't think so.
