No, Pat, I don't mean write your reply to a thread in the chat box. You just want to get the smiley codes which will work to create picture symbols there. You can just copy and paste the smiley code onto the reply to thread you are creating or just copy it down in your notebook online or to a piece of paper, whatever is easier. Put down in the numbers and/or words which will create the smiley you want exactly as shown.
Right now I decided to open a new forum window with the chat box on it. I still have this "reply to thread" window open here with my reply to you started. So I decide, hmm, I will check the chat smilie area to open up all the smilie pictures you can select on the forum chat. I then press one of the smilie symbols, in this case I check the

picture in the chat smilie choice area. It puts the words "reality check smilie", not the picture symbol, in the temporary chat box reply area on the left hand side. If I make a permanent chatbox remark by pushing the reply button, the "reality check smilie" as a picture (not the code words "reality check smilie") will show up in the permanent chat box reply area on the right hand side as

.
However all I want to do is obtain the smilie code to add to my post here, not post a permanent remark on the chat box. So I do not press the reply button on the chat box. I next copy and paste the code for "reality check smilie" to this thread reply window.

. Voila, you are now learning how to produce computer code words in your temporary message area which then becomes the picture symbol itself when you make a permanent post on the forum.
I have to space the words when I am writing about this as "reality check smilie" as if I run the code words together correctly when I post permanently the smilie for this will show up. I am trying to keep this straight by showing you the words which are the code. Wish I could make a video, as words are so much harder sometimes to sort. I am trying to let you see that you need to post the code for the picture in the temporary areas to obtain the picture smilie you want in the permanent area. The code must be absolutely correct in spelling with no spaces.
I do not know why some here seem to have a smilie box on their "reply to the thread" areas and some of us do not. Apparently for some random reason (I assume, maybe browsers or computers) we do not have this show up and have to manually add the codes in our "reply to thread" or temporary areas to have the smilie pictures show up in our permanent posts.
