| Members of the genus Mycoplasma are the smallest organisms [parasites] lacking cell walls that are capable of self-replication and cause various diseases in humans, animals, and plants. Seven different species of mycoplasma have been associated with various infections in humans. The earliest reports of mycoplasma infectious agents in humans appeared in the 1930s, 1940s and finally, in the early 1960s.
