Default Picture posting tutorial

Hi everyone.

Here's a hopefully clear, tutorial about how to post pictures on this forum. There are basically three ways this may be done:

Method 1:
The upload file button

Beneath your forum reply box is a "choose file" button (example below). This button allows you to upload images directly from your computer to the forum. These pictures will be visible only to those who have an account and are currently logged onto this forum (very attractive for folks who don't want their images ripped off). By clicking the button, you are then allowed to navigate to the area where you keep your photos (ie., the "my pictures" folder). All that is left is to select your image. As it says in your forum reply box, filetypes may only be pdf, jpg, gif, mpg, png, txt, and pdf. They also may only be 128 kb . If your image is larger, here are some suggestions for reducing picture size. You can only post 4 pictures per reply.

Method 2:
hyperlink

This won't display the image, just the link. I've done this if an image might scare people. I give people a "contains (fill in the blank) content" type warning and post the link for those who wish to follow. The examples below are tropical scenes, fortunately :

Method 3:
The picture button
-->

This will allow you to place a link between two image tags, which will then be displayed on this forum as picture. This button can be found above the forum reply text box:

Clicking this button should give you something that looks like the image below, with your cursor placed between the image tags (where the red arrow indicates).

Here's a suggested step by step that has worked for me:
To start, you could bring up a new browser window . Next, you would use this window to navigate to the area from where you would like to retrieve the image. Make certain that only the image is visible (it should look like a browser with just your picture and sometimes a lot of white space around it—no buttons, no hyperlinks). Copy the web address, then bring the forum window back up. Click the "insert image" button once, then, while your cursor is still between the image tags, paste the link. Your post should now look like this:
http://www.thecoolestlinkever.com
(except the image tags won't be a blue color )

If you use Photobucket or other free site, you will often have an option to copy the image tags they provide. Copying and pasting the code from these sites often works better than attempting to use the "insert picture" button if only because it saves you the extra step of trying to display the image by itself. The example from photobucket is shown below:

If you would like to get into the how of displaying your image at a specific size, you might like to do a little reading here under SMF Bulletin Board Code.

Hi Jo,

I don't know if anyone has already answered this question for you but if they haven't,

we can link using "Method 2" or "Method 3", or we can insert an FTP link (something I've never done).

Hope this helps
BB

Thanks BB,

Do the pictures or files have to be on a website first - to link to them?

Hey Kath,

Just go over the the far right hand side of the last post and click on the icon that looks like a feather writing on paper and it will open the Quick Reply box.
