| Thanks so much for your reply TCM. From age 10 -16 we raised our own food and boy! did I learn how to can foods. We also raised cickens. I had to kill them, clean and dress them. UGH!! I could not do that now. I do not usually eat any kind of meat. I am trying to eat organic beef and chicken, but it is still nasty. There were few if any freezers in those days so long ago now. I was taught how to make my clothes, make quilts from old clothes and scrape cloth, crochet, embroider by hand. Now a days there is machine for everything. TC, there are homeless shelters here , food kitchens and warming stations, but I cannot get to them from where I live, With MCS, I probably could not tolerate all the smells. I won't see anyone for Christmas but that is okay. My family is not supportive except for my son-in-law who helps in emergencies. He has really tried to help me get a vehicle I can tolerate and drive. It seems we all had a hard time. I am so sorry life is so tough for people, but I believe it is going to get even tougher. There are so many hungry and cold people even in the USA. Yes the school children will get 3 meals a day for free, but it will be poisoned GMO food and they will get sick and die sooner. Thank you US government. They seem to never cease to pull shenanigans to get what they what. The people's voices are just ignored. They treat us like mushrooms. Keep us in the dark and feed us manure. All of us probably have a story to tell. Some Good and some bad. Life is just tough. Someone asked me if I wish I ws 23 again and lived to be 100. My answer was definitely not. My Mother was left with 4 chilren to raise. I will never know how she did it. She married again when I was 2-1/2 and things were a little easier. Oh gosh, all those memories. I pray all will have a Blessed, Holy and Happy Christmas. Gator All I want for Christmas is to be well again and for my children and grandchilren to be healthy and have a good life. |

| janedoe, This is what you wrote and it sums you up: "and if you dont want your family paying for our stupidity, then your gonna have to move out the USA,in case you havernt noticed, thats what us does " I can't believe someone would brag about using the system. Jane wrote: why the hell are you harping on the word free? no kidding, i know that you pay into it, so why not get it back? Get a job Jane! And quit taxing my dollars. Enjoy your dinner that we paid for.

| So the system is broken (deep down I think we all know that), but let's not beat up each other over it. Let's all become part of the solution to solve what is broken. Let's try to restore, not destroy. Two interesting discussions on topic: Teaching Them To Fish - A Response To The Comments Yesterday I wrote a post about personal responsibility. I made some points about the current state of our country and it's people. It has been enlightening to read the comments. I do enjoy knowing what others are thinking. As I said in the beginning I usually don't make political statements here but in my mind this statement was not so much political but societal. I expected and got comments from both sides of the political spectrum defending their positions and explaining who is to blame. Some wanted to place all the problems on big business, some chose to blame specific groups, some had it in for the politicians but the thing is we are all to blame. Some implied or came right out and questioned my compassion. I am a compassionate person and help people every day. I do know that we have to offer people a hand up and that is what this is all about. A hand up - Not a hand out. Truth is that it is more than a few who scam the system. Those programs that were instituted by compassionate people are used and abused. We go around saving the day only to forget to attach obligation to the assistance. We do it with our social welfare, we do it with our bailouts, and we have created an expectation of "rights" that people now believe are unalienable. There are privileges that have been available for years but they are not our "rights". No where in the Bill of Rights are we guaranteed public transportation for example. There was a story one person relayed yesterday about of a person who was complaining about the loss of a public transportation system and had stated that public transportation was a human right. P-u-lease! Teaching to fish Teaching Someone to Fish requires that we attach conditions and responsibilities to our compassion. We expect that parents will learn the skills they need so that they can teach their children to be responsible, excusing bad behavior and not expecting them to produce is one of the basic problems of our society. We expect that someone getting by on public assistance is trying to help out others and to rise above the need for the assistance. We expect that someone who needs the temporary assistance of unemployment is out there looking for work and is willing to adjust their skills and salary expectations to meet the current marketplace. We expect that people who are being helped to save their homes now take on responsibility for living up to the new mortgage responsibility. We expect that corporations that have received bail outs use the money for improvement not to continue to pay bonuses for jobs that were not done well or they would not have allowed the companies to get in the state they were in in the first place. Ok enough already you get the drift. I am thankful the Thursday that I live in a country where all sides can voice their opinions. | so tell me.. what exactly is it that your upset about? is it because you dont qualify or know of these programs? or that you think im not worthy to recieve them?well, do you consider my dad, 85 yr old WWII vet worthy of services? well, im his caretaker. my brother the dope fiend ran threw all my dads savings, was dealing from this house, my dads now broke and afraid of mike returning. hes in prison now, but when he gets out, he will be back. only thing keeping away is the fact he knows i wont hesitate to put a bullit in him ( let me guess, against gun laws too, right) im the one that came in here to clean, im the one that got his bills in order, canceled the 18 credit cards he didnt know about, this house has been in serious disrepair for many years, thats how i got sick, because i moved back here to help a war vet.. so what your beef anyway? do YOU understand that america has programs for the elderly and sick?> did YOU know when you worked that youd be paying into it? if you dont like paying for my meals ( witch you dont, i dont get food stamps) then you should have worked under the table and not paid taxes. it all comes around, are you new? dont be mad at me, be mad at the people that put these programs into place!!! just because i know how to access them, and you probably dont, thats not my fault, thats yours!! if i had enough money i wouldnt be on SSI..period! if i could afford it, i wouldnt take money from the gov, so get off your high damn horse and realize im not the problem.. you either like the way america works, or you dont, but if you think that im the one taking all the money for myself, then your an idiot. i didnt put these programs into place! I MYSELF never took a dime out of your paycheck, that was the GOVERNMENT that did that!! hello!! wake up, and that these programs are for people like my dad....your paying for a WWII vet to eat. and he fought for you... | I think that people who harp on about freeloaders stealing their taxes need a reality check. It won't be long now before the last jobs go and they too need welfare. They also need to look how much of their precious tax money goes into funding war and genocides .An awful lot more than goes into helping families in need. |

| thank you carla, your right. and its funny, how many people ive heard on this site wanting disability.. disability is coming out your checks too! and yeah, you get hungry or cold enough, you'll be applying for these programs too.

| I feel that there will always be people who will at times need help to survive. Even Jesus made such a remark (For you always have the poor with you). When this is true, when people need our help and compassion and our understanding, it is wrong to belittle them. If they are not able to earn a living because of a disability it is wrong to fault them for having to depend on provided income from the government. This is especially true of those who are elderly and often extremely sick. Or of those who have lost their jobs and then their homes through no fault of their own. I think it is those who are taking advantage of the system who should be denied handouts. The government in the US should not be handing out medical care, food stamps, welfare and college education funds to people who have no right whatsoever to them, namely those who are illegal aliens (non-citizens). There are also some who do milk the system and sometimes it's doctors from the other side of the equation who are defrauding medicare and medicaid. It will take time to change the attitudes of those who have had generations of their families on the welfare system, time to enable them to learn that if they are able bodied they will earn more if they become educated and work. When they do they will then have more to say about what happens to their government. When they pay taxes they will learn to care about how much they are taxed. The government gives nothing to people without many strings attached and all it gives in return is a paltry income along with a lifetime spent at or below the poverty level where even what food you may buy will be determined by bureaucrats, people like the infamous Mrs. BO, people who think they have the right to tell you where to live and how to live and what to believe. I think this about sums it up, quoted from Paddy Pizappi's comments in an earlier post: "...This post was about taking personal responsibility. It was not a party line "throw them to the wolves" message; it was one of hope that we all from the lowest to the highest strive to make our own lives better. Of course there will always be people who need our help. Of course I feel for those of us who have to change jobs, have lost careers, and have lost savings due for the most part to no fault of their own. What I am saying is we need to find a way to dig ourselves out of the mess.
