Colloidal silver is a colloid of silver particles in water. It has antimicrobial properties and is used on external wounds and burns to prevent infection. It is also claimed by some to be a beneficial nutritional supplement and to be a powerful antibiotic. The ingestion of colloidal silver in large quantities or over a long period of time may cause argyria, a condition in which the skin turns blue-gray.

Colloidal silver can be used to keep drinkable water potable over a long period; however, it is not suited for the initial disinfection of water. It is also used internally and externally for health benefits. Silver has been used as a topical antiseptic (internal use not recommended) for minor burns for more than 100 years. High concentrations of colloidal silver kill many bacteria in vitro (that is, under laboratory conditions, rather than in the human body) and the topical (or external use) of colloidal silver to kill microbes is well established. Though colloidal silver was a prescribed treatment in the U.S. Navy's corpsman's manual until 1973, the use of colloidal silver as an ingested medication remains controversial.

Advocates of colloidal silver claim it to be a useful supplement to their diet, providing them with improved health and well being and (among other things) a low incidence of colds and flu.[citation needed] They also assert that, under careful use of properly produced colloidal silver, argyria is virtually impossible. [5] These claims are anecdotal, and have not yet been confirmed or refuted by scientific study.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned over-the-counter sales of colloidal silver products claiming therapeutic value, or their advertisement as providing health benefits. The FDA has issued warnings to internet sites selling or promoting colloidal silver. If no health benefits are claimed, and colloidal silver is sold as a supplement, its sale is legal as long as the products comply with all other FDA regulations.

Sulphonamide-based groups of drugs. The original antibacterial sulfonamides (sometimes called simply sulfa drugs) are synthetic antimicrobial agents that contain the sulfonamide group. The sulfonylureas (main article: sulfonylureas) and thiazide diuretics (main article thiazide) are newer drug groups based on the antibacterial sulfonamides.

In bacteria, antibacterial sulfonamides act as competitive inhibitors of the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase, DHPS. DHPS catalyses the coversion of PABA (para-aminobenzoate) to dihydropteroate, a key step in folate synthesis. Folate is needed for the cell to synthesize nucleic acids (nucleic acids are essential building blocks of DNA and RNA), and in its absence cells will be not able to divide. Hence the sulfonamide antibacterials exhibit a bacteriostatic rather than bactericidal effect.

Folate isn't synthesized in mammalian cells, but is instead a dietary requirement. This explains the selective toxicity to bacterial cells of these drugs. Sulfa allergies are not uncommon, hence medications containing sulfonamides are prescribed carefully.

History

The first sulfonamide was trade named prontosil, which is a prodrug. The first experiments with prontosil began in 1932 by the German chemist Gerhard Domagk, and the results were published in 1935 (after his employer, IG Farben, had obtained a patent on the compound). Prontosil was a red azo dye, and in mice had a protective action against streptococci. It had no effect in the test tube, and only exerted an antibacterial effect in the live animal itself. The drug is connected with an azo bond, which is a N=N bond. This bond is easily broken in the GI tract to release the active drug sulfanilamide. And, with war on the horizon, there was interest among the Allies to break the German patent.

Soon it was discovered (1936) that prontosil's active agent was a smaller, more effective compound known as sulfanilamide.

Sulfanilamide had a central role in preventing infection during World War II. American soldiers were issued a first aid kit containing sulfa powder and were told to sprinkle sulfa on any open wound. During the years 1942 to 1943, Nazi doctors conducted sulfanilamide experiments on prisoners in concentration camps during the Holocaust. A preparation called Elixir Sulfanilamide contained diethylene glycol as a solvent, which is toxic. This preparation killed over one hundred people, mostly children, and led to the passage of the 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

The Sulfanilamide compound is more active in the protonated form, which in case of the acid works better in a basic environment. The solubility of the drug is very low and sometimes can crystalize in the kidneys, due to its first pKa of around 10. This is a very painful experience so patients are told to take the medication with copious amounts of water. Newer compounds have a pKa of around 5-6 so the problem is avoided.

Many thousands of permutations of the sulfanilamide structure have been created since its discovery (by one account, over 5400 permutations by 1945), usually by the substitution of another functional group for a single amide hydrogen.

Sulpha is an alternate (UK English) spelling of the common name for Sulfonamide antibiotics.

Preparation

Sulfonamides are prepared by the reaction of a sulfonyl chloride with ammonia or an amine. Certain sulfonamides (sulfadiazine or sulfamethoxazole) are sometimes mixed with the drug trimethoprim, which acts against dihydrofolate reductase.

Side Effects

Hello: I am curious if any of this board members have actually tried and used with any success the colloidal silver supliment. And if used, what is the amount and what are the symptoms.. any side effects??
I have read about colloidal silver and found that was used and reported back in the 70's as a great treatement for parasites and skin conditions. Just a thought.

Ramsi my buddy who was really sick, he used silver to help him out. He swears that it has helped him out alot. He still uses it off and on. He is not as sick as he used to be. He used a liquid form and in cream form if i remember correctly. Lots of people believe in it, then again lots don't. You have to do your research. Bubba uses Colloidal Silver and it has helped her as well. There is info on the forums here, or maybe buba will post some more info on her silver usage. Just remember not to buy bogus stuff. There are lot of fake crap floating around the net being sold by various people. You have to be careful, but from the people i know who use it, it works.

You have to be careful these days with morgellons products. There are tons of people trying to make a fast buck on morgies.

Thank you Franky. I know that there are different opinions and controversy about the colloidal silver. That is why I have asked if there is anyone using it. I certainly do not want to get any sicker than I am already!! I have purchased a bottle, now I do not know the company- but the packaging is dark plastic bottle that has some stamping on the bottom. I have not opened it, since I did not dare if you know what I mean.....but played with the idea of trying it.
I am starting on the peroxide and salt baths. Also Vitamin C and garlic were vitamins that I have been using for a couple of months now. I upped the dozes on both, let's see what happens....
Yo guys are doing such great work on keeping us informed. I have been to lots of other boards but none comes close to this one.
It almost feels like family (for me a family) since no one believes or helps me. My husband, who I live with keeps trying to explain to me, that if he would scratch, he would have the same exact looking scabs and be infected... yeah, right! I wish that he would really listen and see that this is not in my mind... but then again (see my introduction post) it might me on a nervous base, since he is getting on my nerves day-in, day-out for the past 28 years and cannot get rid of him.
My daugther moved out when got married about the same time I moved to this new rental. My menopause kicked in in the same time---- empty nest syndrome, hating the new place and a husband who is verbally and psyhicaly abusing me... I guess could be related to brainfog, Add and other symtomps that I have...

I've been married twice (second time 14 years and two beautiful daughters). I don't have any desire to marry again - wouldn't mind being engaged for the rest of my life - he could live at his house and I would live at mine.

It is a hard thing to get out of abusive relationships. As Bubba says, you have support here.

You guys... I feel so loved. Thank you for all the kindness and support. I only started with this board a few days ago, and already feel like I gained a family. I do not have my family here, there are all back in Europe. The only close family is my daughter, who moved out about 2 years ago after she got married. GOOD FOR HER!
Anyway. The colloidal silver is from Herbal Remedies web and it is 30ppm per dose 99.999% pure silver. Suggested use 1/2 ounce three times daily for one week and 1/4 ounce 3x until desired results are attained. Dark pastic bottle has PETE imprint and logo on bottom. I do not know what color the liquid is, because I was affraid starting on it- hearing all the bad things about it. I do buy from this company and Swanson Vitamins all my mineral and vitamin suppliments. So I trusted the site, but after the thing with Nutrasilver (by the way, I got an e-mail with pictures before and after from the "owner") I did not dare opening it. I am planning on starting during holiday since I am off from work and anything should happen at least I am at home...
