Most often Medical Qi Gong is done with the help of a practitioner, but people also practice this type of alternative exercise on their own:
Medical Qi Gong
“What is Medical Qi Gong?
Widely understood in China but little known in the West, medical qi gong is a modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Medical qi gong is a way of affecting and directing qi, or the life force, for medical benefit. Rather than using needles, herbs, or massage, medical qi gong relies on the ability to direct qi with the mind, the hands, or a ritual object, but without necessarily touching the body. Like its better known counterparts acupuncture and herbal medicine, medical qi gong requires thorough knowledge of TCM scientific theory. A medical qi gong practitioner should be at least as well-trained as an acupuncturist or herbalist. To develop skill with medical qi gong, a practitioner needs to be highly disciplined, with a very focused mind similar to that of a well-seasoned meditator. To practice medicine as subtle as medical qi gong, a practitioner must have unusual abilities of subtle perception. Ideally, a medical qi gong practitioner should also be a medical intuitive in order to make the most accurate diagnosis as well as treatment. Any practitioner's treatment is only as good as his or her diagnosis. “
There are many types of Qi Gong medical practice, just as there are different schools of TCM thought and acupuncture practice. Here is a youtube video series which shows one way to practice some of this on your own. The different body organs are targeted for treatment with different exercises. Each organ has its own voiced sound which is discussed brieflty. Doing these exercises regularly may help the body to balance itself. Currently it is kidney time on the TCM calendar (as far as the organ which is most important to the body) and so doing the kidney exercise (it is not the first video on the page) now would be helpful to strengthen and balance kidney function. These are just short excerpts from the DVD this practitioner is selling:

I have some kidney and lung recordings from a TCM master which I listened to daily when I was first ill as in theory there are also musical sounds which are also supposed to effect the organs. I think doing so may have helped me get rid of some of the illness (parasites?) when it first started. Over time listening to special musical tones or practicing Medical Qi Gong exercises may help to strengthen the body. Doing this as little as 15 minutes a day may bring welcome and inexpensive changes to the flow of qi (chi) in the body.
