| Echinacea and Astragalus are two herbs which may help raise white blood count naturally: Natural cold and flu fighters: over the centuries, traditional medical practitioners have used herbs to ward off infections and relieve cold and flu symptoms. Here are the remedies that have withstood the test of time | Natural Health | Find Articles Astragalus in the TCM tradition is considered a tonic herb (an herb which wards off illness). So if you get sick this herb probably should be discontinued until well, as tonic herbs drive illness deeper into the body once acute illness sets in. A piece of raw astraglus cooked in homemade chicken soup adds extra immune building to the soup. Even better with some added dried "shi take" mushrooms, which also helps the immune system plus it is also reputed to help those with itchy skin: Chinese Food Recipes - Chinese Mushrooms and its Health Benefits Add some ginger and garlic, maybe some red pepper flakes and chopped fresh parsley added a minute or so before done cooking (over cooking parsley destroy its flavor and its vitamins) and you may ward off winter colds before they start. Herbs are wonderful. Used to build health, this is the key to true health in the TCM philosophy. Bon appetit! According to the Chinese almanac the first frost started October 24 (for those who live in northern climes). Winter will start according to them two weeks from this date (essentially the first day of our winter, the solstice Dec.22 this year, is considered by the Chinese to be right in the middle of winter, and winter by their calculation is six weeks out on either side of that date). So time to build up the body with nourishing winter foods, especially in the colder areas of the world. Lamb is considered the most warming meat as is deer (don't think I would do that one with the muscle wasting disease out there). Root vegetables, and winter squash, sweet potatoes, are all good against the winter cold. Amazingly it is suggested that some coffee (coffee is a warming beverage while green tea is cooling) or some hot chocolate be drunk in the winter season. All to help keep the body warm naturally. best, tcm

| Hi Gumball ,I am posting another website which has a more detailed recipe for the soup, no chicken in it, but the chicken with bones are easily added to your soup: WhO SaiD LeaRniNg CaN't Be FuN?? - Science Through Herbs + Immune Soup As you may see from the recipe on the above page the astragalus used in soup is the dried raw herb which comes in slices. With its popularity, even in Western herbalism, you may be able to easily obtain it in either a local herbal store which sells the bulk Western herbs or online. One place I could find with bulk astragalus still in stock is: Astragalus Root Slices Organic The slices may also be found on this site, bottom of the page: Bulk Organic Herbs and Spices Some of the places where I buy Western herbs online were out of the astraglus root, so have no experience buying from this site (doubtless out at other sites as at this time of year folks are looking for it to make their soups or make into teas produced from cooking raw herbs). There may be other online sites which also have bulk astraglus in pieces (not cut and sifted). A way to get more of the calcium out of chicken bones when cooking soup is to add some apple cider vinegar to the soup when first starting to cook. The flavor of the vinegar will boil off by the time the soup is finished (about a couple of tablespoons--something I learned from a Mennonite cookbook). In case anyone reading this post is a novice at soup making from scratch I will mention that it is best to try to skim off the foam which forms on top of the liquid (from the chicken) when first cooking the soup. Gets rid of some of the toxins and improves the taste of the soup. If using astragalus as an herbal addition capsules of powder exist (never have had capsules bother me personally, but everyone may be different). One way to make capsules into something which may be more like tea is to take the suggested capsules for a dose, open them up into a cup and add hot water to make a tea. This will almost be as strong as if making a tea of raw herbs. Astraglus may also be found in tincture or extract form. Sometimes all of these forms of astragalus may also be found in formulas with other immune building herbs. As far as I know there is no astraglus oil. ![]() Hope this helps. best, tcm

| Hey TCM...just dropping by to say I love this thread and thought it's a great way to address a serious epicurean approach to alternative medicine. I think LC must have confused my useless comments with your educational ones. Sorry. I've been noticing that people occasionally make supportive comments when they enjoy people's posts. Sorry, Frank...I know you said Quote:
