Re: valarian root for sleep, pain Ok, LC, even though you will probably think I am exaggerating, there are some people who will experience the opposite effect from taking valerian. Yep, you guessed it, that is what happened to me when I took valerian. Instead of fallling into a peaceful sleep, I went into that sort of quasi-sleep where you feel awake the whole night. My body kept starting awake, as I felt as if I were falling. So that was when I learned that a small minority of folks can have the opposite reaction to valerian (maybe the CNS is wired differently). I asked the Western herbalist who taught my class if she had ever heard of this, and she told me maybe about 10% of people will have this reaction with valerian. One thing that does not bother me and helps me to get calm if my nervous system feels kinda "hyper" is chamomile. I can use that just fine, and if I take it a half hour or so before bedtime, it leaves me relaxed so that I fall asleep fairly quickly. Chamomile is related to ragweed, so if allergic to ragweed you may want to skip chamomile. Otherwise, it makes a great cuppa tea or else the capsules or tincture will work too.
best,
tcm
