| Hey all, Here's some good information that explains why garlic works and why Garlic Powder MAY BE A BETTER TREATMENT THAN FRESH GARLIC OR GARLIC OIL Cysteine proteases play numerous indispensable roles in the biology of parasitic organisms. Aside from previously known general catabolic functions and protein processing, cysteine proteases may be key to parasite immunoevasion, excystment/encystment, exsheathing and cell and tissue invasion. Parasite cysteine proteases are unusually immunogenic and have been exploited as serodiagnostic markers and vaccine targets. Although host homologues exist, parasite cysteine proteases have distinct structural and biochemical properties including, pH optima and stability, the alteration in peptide loops or domain extensions, diverse substrate specificity and cellular location.... Antimalarial Activity of Allicin, a Biologically Active Compound from Garlic Cloves Alida Coppi,1 Melissa Cabinian,1 David Mirelman,2 and Photini Sinnis1* Department of Medical Parasitology, New York University School of Medicine, New York, New York 10010,1 Department of Biological Chemistry, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel2 The incidence of malaria is increasing, and there is an urgent need to identify new drug targets for both prophylaxis and chemotherapy. Potential new drug targets include Plasmodium proteases that play critical roles in the parasite life cycle. We have previously shown that the major surface protein of Plasmodium sporozoites, the circumsporozoite protein (CSP), is proteolytically processed by a parasite-derived cysteine protease, and this processing event is temporally associated with sporozoite invasion of host cells. E-64, a cysteine protease inhibitor, inhibits CSP processing and prevents invasion of host cells in vitro and in vivo. Here we tested allicin, a cysteine protease inhibitor found in garlic extracts, for its ability to inhibit malaria infection. At low concentrations, allicin was not toxic to either sporozoites or mammalian cells. At these concentrations, allicin inhibited CSP processing and prevented sporozoite invasion of host cells in vitro. In vivo, mice injected with allicin had decreased Plasmodium infections compared to controls. When sporozoites were treated with allicin before injection into mice, malaria infection was completely prevented. We also tested allicin on erythrocytic stages and found that a 4-day regimen of allicin administered either orally or intravenously significantly decreased parasitemias and increased the survival of infected mice by 10 days. Together, these experiments demonstrate that the same cysteine protease inhibitor can target two different life cycle stages in the vertebrate host. Prayers...Linda |

| ABOUT ALLICIN SOURCES Fresh garlic “Each tablet is equivalent to 4800 mg of fresh garlic” Fresh garlic does not contain any Allicin. The reasons are: 1. Up to 65% of fresh garlic is water 2. Fresh garlic contains only alliin and not Allicin. A typical whole fresh garlic weighing 2-4 gram may contain from 6 to 14 mg of alliin per gram. The natural Allicin potential is assumed to be 2.5 - 5.1 mcg/g of alliin. Dried garlic/ garlic powder Kwai, Puregar, Garlicin, Allirich None of these products contain any Allicin. Dried garlic powder contains both the allinase and alliin (precursor to Allicin) but not Allicin (1). On an equivalent weight, dry garlic powder has a higher level of alliin (3x) than fresh garlic. To preserve the allinase activity that is sensitive to stomach acid (so that alliin can be converted to Allicin), dried garlic powder is sometimes enterically coated, so that some Allicin can be produced in the intestine. This is a highly imprecise technology and the amount of Allicin finally realized is hard to determine. Allicin powder extract Allisure, Allimax, Alliforce, Allitru, Alli-C Unlike fresh garlic and dried garlic powder, Allicin powder extract contain a stable amount of bio-available Allicin that is ready to be used by the body. Aged garlic extract Kyolic® Aged garlic does not contain Allicin (1). Aged garlic is produced through a slow decomposition process where garlic bulbs are aged up to 20 months. The end product is a S-allylcysteine (SAC) product popularly known as Kyolic. S-allylcysteine does deliver some of Allicin’s benefits, but in a much reduced potency and only a fraction of Allicin’s broad spectrum of benefits. Distilled garlic oil Does not contain Allicin. Distilled garlic oil involves heating crushed garlic in boiling water and collecting the steam as it vaporizes. Oil macerates. Does not contain Allicin. Originally used as a condiment, it consists of garlic cloves or garlic powder mixed into vegetable oil and then encapsulated. Summary: Most garlic supplements do not contain Allicin itself. Some products are standardized to contain a certain amount of alliin and will list the theoretical Allicin potential. Some supplements claim to contain as much or more Allicin as daily dose of fresh garlic; read the labels to be sure. Tests indicate a wide variation among commercially available supplements. The content of Allicin the most important indicator and Allicin should be in a defined in terms of microgram (mcg) or milligram (mg) and in a standardized amount If Allicin content is not available, try to look for enteric coated garlic products, which have at least a small chance of producing some Allicin, although the amount created will rarely be of therapeutic value. Allicin powder extract is the only way to get a stable and standardized amount of Allicin that is ready to be used by the body directly. |

| Lc, can find cheaper brands of garlic, kyolic for one is very good brand, but it is not with active ingredient found in fresh garlic like the allimax. This is the cheapest I have seen anyone sell the allimax brand. best, tcm

| Garlic has many health properties. Its very much recommended to people who want to take the natural approach. I just wish doctors here (USA) were at least trained in the basics of nutrition and not so drug focused on everything. There are so many conditions that can be cured or treated naturally its staggering. We are so far behind European country's when it comes to using natural remedy's. |
