Been looking at Fungus. Fungus Gnats their larvae and Collembola feed on and are attracted to some fungus. How about this for a candidate for the head lesions and freaky hairs and head protrusions.

Our Collembola look nothing like what the Americans call 'springtails' they're tiny mites and larvae that live in the soil. I'm adding Citronella to the mix this week.

Fig 3 reminds me of 'the lizard' if as they say..
