I'm not sure what foods you all feed your pets but before I knew about this, and before i knew about their food issues, I had a lot of problems with my dogs. Gastrointestinal problems that sounded like what I had, IBS, loud stomach noises and constipation. My dog's skin would get red and irritated(my GSP), my Rottweiler who was the sweetest dog ever acted suspiciously and growled at me all the while her stomach making horendous noises. I realized back then eventually that it was food in her case. She was sensitive to something I was feeding her and when I changed her diet she was the same docile teddy bear she always was. I had her 4 years after that with not one incident, until I had to have her put down because she broke her leg and x rays showed bone cancer. This was a dog who always wanted to be with me, but when she didn't feel well at that time she actually wanted nothing to do with me. She would go off by herself. She went from being my shadow to growling like she was annoyed with me if I went up to pet her. I had a thorough exam done on her and nothing came up. I feared I was going to have to have her put down because I couldn't have a dog I was afraid of, as much as I loved her. My husband had her since she was a puppy and there were never any issues with her, and this all started when she was around 5 years old. As I said a change in diet made a miraculous change in her and I never had another problem with her thank God.
My GSP-(German shorthaired pointer) has had problems since he was a little under a year old, as you can see in my post above.
He smells and itches a lot and has eye goop (full of fibers under a microscope) when he isn't feeling himself. I've noticed though that this happens when he eats something he shouldn't. I have him on a strict diet of a dry food like Venison and Sweet Potato because the grains make him much worse (I also cook meat up for him in with his dry food). I think one of his problems is wheat. His hair had always been brillo-like in the past and dull and he would have episodes where he almost looked like he had mange, he would lose hair in spots. The change in diet has made all of the difference. He pulls me on walks again (which isn't necessarily a good thing for me, but I thought he had slowed down with age, but it was his diet making him sluggish).
It will take a while to see a change, but I get compliments on my GSP now and people have said he could be a show dog (although he still smells!). His coat is so shiny and soft, like velvet and his eyes are free of eye goop (unless my son feeds him bread or anything from the table). I can tell right away when he has eaten something he shouldn't have by both his sluggish behavior and the big wads of eye goop I wipe from his eyes.
When you think about it they say kids with Autism do much better when they avoid wheat and dairy, obviously it isn't a cure for them, but it takes away other issues such as food allergies which they are more prone to and it adds to their problem causing them to feel spacey and bad in general, making some Autism cases seem even worse. With pets food allergies/sensitivities are going to make things worse (in people also) by taxing their immune system even further. It may not be the problem for your pet, but try it and see. Try foods that claim limited ingredients. I switch my dogs from Venison Sweet Potato to Duck, so that they don't develop allergies to what I'm feeding them now. Many of them are high in essential fatty acids which help as a natural anti-inflammatory and also probiotics in them. I also feed my dogs yogurt here and there as I know they are not sensitive to dairy.
