It was the flag of the first united German nation in modern times; Das Deutsche Kaiserreich 1867-1918 (The German Empire).
"The schwarz-weiß-rot (black-white-red) German imperial flag was adopted by the North German Confederation in 1867, as a combination of the black-white of Prussia and the red-white of the Hanseatic League [and/or of Brandenburg]. In 1871 it was adopted as merchant flag for the German Empire, and in 1892 promoted to national flag."

The Flag also stands for what was stolen from us; black and white are the colors of Prussia. The other Flag represents for many Germans only the current regime of corruption and decay. They privatize the property of the German people, export our jobs, and dare to call it "development". Our "education" has become so bad, it's almost down to US standard. Well, in the US at least parents can still choose.

A good read to get a little insight in Germany and Germanic history in general:
Tacitus on Germany (55-115a.d.)
