Well, here's my take on this Sadsack, that sounds really freaky, but something similar I've experienced, in that the fibers (which IMHO are nematodes in the dauer juvenile state), are attracted to me!
This makes sense (to me) because I have seen the posted pictures (thanks to those who did the microscopic pics - many thx) of a fungus which I think is Arthrobotrys. This fungus puts out an attractant to draw nematodes to it, for consumption.
Therefore, we act as a magnet for these nematodes. The dauer juveniles are deposited by millions into cotton crops (and other crops) to kill pesky bugs. They are in a state of sort of "suspended animation" in which they do not eat, drink, or defecate.
But they party-down when they find Arthrobotrys, which I believe exists BIG TIME on our skin and under our skin (the whole big kahuna, otherwise known as the micelium). I have found these fibers injecting themselves into the lesions on my body, but I have also found them burrowing into the hair follicles. The nematode is INSIDE a casing, and when it enters your body, it leaves the casing behind.
Yours truly,
sar
