My Lugols Iodine has arrived and says 'This is used as a traditional diet supplement in Racing Pigeons'

So, thought I should read up on it.

"Lugol's iodine may also be used as an oxidizing germicide, however it is somewhat undesirable in that it may lead to scarring and discolors the skin temporarily. One way to avoid this problem is by using a solution of 70% ethanol to wash off the iodine later."

Historically, taking it internally was used to treat gout, and first line treatment for severe hypothyroidism. Now, they use pure potassium iodide, without the more toxic elemental iodine to treat the thyroid.

Iodine doesnt stain cancer cells and is used in a number of experiments.
